We are getting our arena put in this week and we have it currently measured out to be 90’ x 200’ - ideally i was wanting 100’ x 200’ but we have no more room to expand any wider - will that be a little uncomfortable to ride the turns when practicing hunter courses? does anybody have any experience jumping in arenas about that size?
My outdoor is 100x200 and my indoor is 70x150. Obviously the outdoor rides a lot better then the indoor, and frees me up to set more complex courses, but I can also set plenty of technical exercises in the indoor. I’ve jumped 1.30m without issues, and no issues making the turns.
My advice is to go as big as you can to give yourself the most options for courses and grid work as possible. If that means 90x200, then that still gives you a good amount of room to work with.
10’ won’t make an enormous difference. Mine is 100x150, I was jumping in there with my 17h horse with a big stride, and it was fine. 10’ will take out 1 stride (less, really, unless it’s a pony)
The more “uncomfortable” you can make schooling at home, the easier it gets at shows All my jumps are 10’ wide, which actually makes 12’ jumps at shows look smaller and less intimidating.
But really, 90’ instead of 100’ isn’t a big deal, and it will make you ride more correctly and use your corners
We jumped all the time in Ohio in 60x120, even 50x100 indoor arenas. It’s not ideal, but it’s doable. 90x200 is huge, you’ll be fine. Since you can’t go any wider, can you go longer? Those 250’, 300’+ long rings really ride great when jumping. Even if you went down to 80’ wide and could then get 250’ length out of it, personally I think that would be better than the 90x200.
Thank you for all the responses! We tried to extend as much as we could and we ended up with about 95’ at the top of the arena and then it tapers down to about 91’ at the bottom and the length is 202’
That’ll be fantastic, enjoy!
