Armchair saddle fitters, may I have your help?

Came across this Passier Nicole Grand Gilbert, which was new when I was still in college. I have it out on trial — any thoughts as to whether it’s a good option? The Goober seems to move happily in it, and I love the way it fits me. My (very unschooled) eye says it’s worth keeping and having a fitter make some adjustments, but if that’s the crazy talk of an unsalvageable pipe dream, please advise.

Data points:

  • 14.1 Arab, 18 yo
  • Normally goes in a medium tree Devoucoux Biarritz (not purchased on my dime)
  • Back in regular work after a period of sloth, but period of dramatic body reshaping is done. (He just likes to let his gut hang out when at rest.)
  • No lofty dressage goals, just schooling and possibly some baby-level shows

Looks pretty good to me. I’m not a “saddle fitter”, but have put quite a few saddles on quite a few horses successfully for a number of decades. Passier is a quality brand, this saddle will likely outlast most of the newer and currently “stylish” ones. Your horse will tell you if there’s a problem.

I’m a fan of passier, I think they fit a lot of horses. I’d ride in that, especially if the horse (who is totes adorbs!) Is happy

In the last picture it looks like the saddle tilts a hair to the right. It’s probably the horse and not the saddle.

I noticed that tilt in the picture as well. I didn’t fuss about him standing square for these quick pictures, so that’s probably it. If it’s not, I’ve got a professional fitter coming out in a few weeks to fine-tune things, so if the panels are truly uneven we can adjust.

Many thanks to you all for confirming my hunch that this might work. This is actually the first saddle I’ve ever purchased, so I’m feeling very adult right now (and the 12 yo girl in me is totally squealing).

Late to the party, but I agree with everyone here. Passiers are great saddles for fitting a variety of horses, and the workmanship is excellent. My daughter has a dressage saddle from the 80’s that was in almost mint condition when she bought it a few years ago, and it has fit our wider ponies really well. BTW, your Arab is absolutely adorable! Let your 12 yo self squeal on!
