Artimud replacement

I can’t get artimud locally, it is fairly expensive online so I am wondering if I could use triple bacterial ointment in the frog cavity then pack with clay for a leg poutice?

My mare had a slight tenderness on one side of her frog when I cleaned her feet yesterday. It could have been a bruise but in case it is a bit of thrush I want to treat it.

Unless there’s TRULY a need for an antibiotic, I wouldn’t use any. Get copper sulfate crystals, make a paste with zinc oxide or desitin, ie Pete’s Goo, and go with that

Just get a thrush treatment, like Thrush Buster or Koppertox. If you really want to pack the hoof and wrap it, sugardine (betadine + sugar) is great.

Life Data makes a clay that is similar to Artimud.

This… it sticks in there like nothing else… you can also try just straight zinc oxide and see if that makes any improvement. I’ve also had good luck with 50/50 ACV and water.

Traditional OTC thrush treatments are very harsh using the above works just as well or better without being harsh.

For some reason I didn’t get any notifications…

Yes, of course, Pete’s goo, I have made that up before. I have desitin in the tack room, guess I was thinking with the mud season starting just wanting to keep it in and undiluted with muck.

Std, yeah I saw the Life Date product online, shipping is pricey.
thanks all!

Desitin is SOOOO sticky, it’s unlikely that there’s going to be a lot of invasion of mud. But also, if you do get zinc oxide powder that’s probably even stickier

Are you in the US? Valley Vet, Smartpak and Riding Warehouse all carry it and don’t have expensive shipping and free if you spend a certain $$

I’m in Canada.

Well then  if you have some zinc oxide clean and dry the feet and with either a popsicle stick or a small syringe squirt some of that down in there. if you use a syringe letting it sit in hot water or popping it in the microwave to warm it up helps it flow much easier, especially when it’s cold out… and if you have copper sulfate, mix some of that in with it… or you can soak 50/50 ACV/water… but the zinc stays up in there even in mud.

My farrier uses Hoof Stuff (that’s seriously the name :)) if he can’t get artimud. It packs in the crevices and stays put for several days.
