At His Fastest, This Race Horse Was Running 44.6 MPH!

Holy Cow! Look at those numbers (when you do the math, it was 44.6 MPH). Read the comments below the article from people who saw it.

Is there a video?

Yes! I found it. Here is the link. It doesn’t show much until the replay at the end when you get to see how the horse exploded on the inside after the stumble.

Cameraman really messed up not including the runaway in any of the footage. :frowning:

LOL, that was the first thing I thought too, Cindyg!

So considering all other things being equal apparently the biggest handicap for race horses is the jockey.
Remove the jockey = Amazing increase in speed

(not that Fort Larned wasn’t already fast as heck)

Because, at that point, he was a non-factor in the race. Lack of rider is quite a weight break, after all.

Who in this day and age with the racehorse slaughter controversy, names a horse “Gourmet Dinner”?

I agree that it is repugnant.

You were probably speaking rhetorically, but FWIW, Equibase lists the breeder as Ocala Stud & WILLIAM J TERRIL, but they may not have named him; another owner may have done so. Whoever did name him was probably going on his dam’s name, Potluck Dinner (is that worse? I can’t decide). Her dam was Romantic Dinner. Ugh.

The whole practice of giving stupid or insulting names to racehorses offends me. It is interesting that most of the really great horses have had fairly noble names. Then again, a noble horse can make a silly name sound better (Seabiscuit).

As for the unfortunately named horse, the talented five year old has won $1,149,827 so far and has an E figure rating of 116.

My greyhound is not impressed.

“Dine and Dash” would have been funny and not politically incorrect!
