At the Beach

Once a year we make a very informal drag hunt on the beach. Here’s the footage from last weekend.

At Freeport, Tx.

I so needed that on this dreary, rainy, miserable day!! Thanks for warming me up.

Is that John DeLeyer on the grey? Is it hard to get salt water out of tack?

Makes me wish I rode well enough to hunt!

Thank You!

Jawa is right! We REALLLYY needed that video! It is fun to see people shedding their coats, with a grin. I liked the obstacles, too.

When I read in the post that it was a very informal hunt, I expected to see some form of swim wear, and snorkles. Horses would have flippers as required tack.:lol:

Your horse was so happy until he had to go in the water. Poor Baby! Probably worried about critters he couldn’t see, and whether there was another way out.

Tell us more about the day, please

HidddenAcres, I rode my horse in the Chesapeake Bay with tack on. I made sure my tack was properly conditioned with the Stubben conditioner and I had no ill effects (not stiff and still in good condition years later) from the ride, even when I didn’t get around to cleaning and re-conditioning about a week later.

I am so jealous.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I noticed there were equal numbers of “Like” and “Dislike” marks on youtube.

Yes, that was John Deleyer on the whitish gray and it wasn’t me but John’s son Andreas (A.J.) who had the head cam.

Two of us did a half-mile gallop at the end; I wish I’d had a head cam on for that! Even after miles of fast cantering my horse still had some serious speed in him.

As for the tack, I don’t know. When I got home I blasted it with water, then blasted it with leather conditioner, and then wiped it down.

I am so jealous! We didn’t even go out today. What a treat!

That looked like sooo…much fun.

FYI, fellow COTHers - John is Harry DeLeyer’s son and you should see AJ ride in the jumpers. If he doesn’t have Young Riders on his goal list, he should. If you don’t know who Harry DeLeyer is, go to school on google.

I guess John isn’t a BNT because he’s having too much fun teaching people to ride and hunt on the beach in Texas instead of riding around a ring in Wellington.

That could be a recruiting video for making that wonderful choice!

I’m feeling the need for a road trip to Texas.

Thanks for the video. Looks like y’all had a blast.

OMG…only ONCE a YEAR?
If ONLY I could ride a hunt like that, I swear I’d be ALL OVER IT!

With that kind of open, flat beach available (close by? I assume?) I would so love that!

The helmet cam was amazing…clear, not ‘bouncy’ and so much fun!!!

thanks…I’m going to share it, and I’m sure watch it again, myself!

JSWAN – I know Virginia hunts have a reputation as being very traditional, but don’t any of them ever make beach trips?

Yup - entire hunt clubs go on road trips. Even bring their hounds. Clubs from Canada and our northern states come here to hunt, we go south to hunt, we’re all flitting around like butterflies.

I, however, did not get away this season as I’d hoped.

I did, however, accidentally tip a wheelbarrow load of horse crap into the mud yesterday.

So I got that going for me.

The video was fun to watch. Thanks for sharing it.

Sigh.

Absolutely wonderful.

Wow, LOVED it!! Do you mind if I repost on my facebook page? What a breath of fresh air!

Ohhhh, that looks like so much fun!!!

I organize a beach ride for my boarders… Just put it on the calendar for March  Hmmm. Is it a public beach you drag hunt on?

Thank you so much for sharing. I loved the slow motion editing too! VERY, VERY cool!

Yes, it’s public. Mostly deserted in late January, which I guess is why it is scheduled at that time.
