Attire Questions

I know, and I agree that a lot of modern fabrics are superior. But we still wear things like Melton fabric and leather tack, reject bling and trendy stuff… guess we’re a bit old fashioned.

I’d not go duck hunting wearing cotton - no way. But a few times and love it, but sitting there freezing my butt off…

But for some reason wearing the string gloves isn’t a big deal. Maybe the difference is the warmth of the horse’s body? Never really thought that much about it but though I’ve come in pretty freakin’ wet and miserable (one time my boots got SOAKED and water pooled in the sole whine whine whine) my hands have never been cold.

Perhaps the small holes in the weave of the cotton gloves trap your body heat and keep your hands warm? I’ve never tried a pair. When I’ve had the opportunity to hunt as a guest with Hunter’s Rest, I’ve been fortunate, and it hasn’t rained.

I found a wonderful pair of tan leather gloves with a warm lining at Cabela’s last year. But I usually wear my Roeckl gloves. They’re not especially sturdy, and probably wouldn’t hold up to the rigors of first field, but for a hilltopper like me, they’ve been fine.

I just ordered myself a copy of Wadsworth’s booklet from the Chronicle store so I can keep myself on the straight & narrow.

If I may highjack the thread for just a minute, is it proper for someone who does not have their colors to carry a crop/bat (NOT a whip) with a stag handle? Found a cool one for sale, but don’t want to step over the line.

Is this the Riding with Foxhounds in America? If so I have read and re-read- puts the fear of the MFH into me, ha!

It is. I’ve heard so much about the booklet that I thought it was time I got a copy of my own. There are so many cool things that pop up on eBay, but that are inappropriate for me. Such as the lovely staff coat that’s on there now for $90…so any of you whips out there, you can get yourself a deal !

You may carry a whip with a stag handle. Only Masters or staff may use a whip anywhere near a hound. You can hook a gate with it, you can encourage your horse with it.

I ordered a ladies whip from HC and apparently I need a children’s size as it if far too big for my hands, when I try to bundle the thong and reins in there as well.

I’ll have to return it. I have a very very old one that is a bit tatty, so I’ll be using it for a while.

Thank you 2ndyrgal. I wouldn’t dream of carrying a whip, I’m a complete beginner, and even if I were not, I’m certain I’m too uncoordinated to use one. I don’t normally carry a crop when riding my pony at home, as she’s quite forward and doesn’t need one. I liked the idea of having a handle that would be useful for gates.

All the advice you’ve received looks good to me!! The helmets should be solid black velvet imho. The “skunk” helmets are sooooo show ringey and not foxhuntery. Behind your back some foxhunters will snigger at you with a CO……sorry but thats the truth!
If you wanna look like a foxhunter; dress like one!! Simple! All our equestrian disciplines have a uniform and when you can - wear it. If you can’t then do your best to come close. No hunt will kick you out for wearing a skunk on yer head but you’ll stand out…do you want to? If you’re just trying hunting then wear it until you’'re sure you wanna keep doing it then fork out the moola later. Thats how we all get there!
BTW…I wear black gloves!! :winkgrin::winkgrin::D:lol:
Get some tan ones. Yucky and you should know better.

I was looking at pictures from an opening hunt around here and only two members were not wearing black gloves!! Looks hideous.

Are wool gloves eg http://www.huntingstockmarket.com/product/Oiled-Wool/3-35.aspx
string gloves?

They would be warm when wet, although probably don’t grip as well as cotton.

No, they’re wool. String is the cotton thread. They look toasty, though.

One season I wore fingerless wool gloves because my finger was broken and I couldnt get a glove on. I’ve worn wool gloves before, but was surprised that my fingers weren’t that cold even though they weren’t protected. Never rode with them wet so no help there.

Hi all- me again! Where are the best places to shop? ie. Best prices, customer service, shipping times/prices?

Is a clincher browband ever okay to hunt in?

Call the Middleburg Tack Exchange. www.middleburgtack.com

No, unless you have absolutely no other plain browband to use. Ideally, you would use a plain, flat hunt bridle. Since you are starting out, you will have leeway if you have a padded, raised, etc bridle, but please, just use the plainest tack you have.

I’ve found great stuff on eBay, at terrific prices. But it is eBay, there’s no return if it doesn’t fit quite right, etc., so you can end up wasting money. Horseloverz.com has some things, like the Ovation melton, at reasonable prices, and their customer service is good.

Crazy Horse Tack is in MA, and they have a web site. They carry the Shires line. I have a Shires coat for cubbing, and I really like the fit and the quality. It actually has a waist, and yet still has room through the shoulders. If it’s not too far from you, a visit to their store would let you try on coats and vests to get the right fit. They also have the Shires shirt, which is a cotton knit body with woven fabric collar and cuffs, very comfortable, but still proper looking.

If you’re small (like a women’s 4 in regular clothes) send me a p.m. I have a vintage hunt coat in good condition that I could send to you to try (one of those eBay “buys” that didn’t work out)

Hey
I’m getting married in July and my Fiance is Vietnamese and we are having a Vietnamese style wedding.

My current problem is I dont know what exactly I should wear. His family said to have a white american style wedding gown (which i have) and a “prom” style dress.

I know that we are doing a procession, tea ceromony and then the reception. So what dress would i wear to each part? It would seem odd to serve to in a weddind dress.
Seriously? Reported…

Does anyone have a link to the crochet-backed gloves that are NOT string? Because when reading the thread I got worried I had it wrong about what string gloves were, lol, but then when the link to the string gloves was posted, that is what I thought they were all along (whew)! (s). But I am curious what the crochet ones look like since they can be mistaken for string. TIA

^aah, gotcha, definitely similar. Thanks!

Which color of gloves would you prefer for formal hunting (with a dark navy or black coat) - acorn or tan?

I’m looking at the SSG Pro Show Deerskin gloves on Dover’s site.
