Attire to keep you cool (schooling & showing)

I am a winter person. I can ride in the cold just fine. I am very heat sensitive and would like to look into attire that may help (even to a small degree) with staying somewhat cooler and more comfortable. I know there is no perfect fix.

Shirts: I do not like fitted shirts as I do have a tummy. Looking for both shirts that would be good for showing that are short or long sleeve. I have a decent long sleeve one but have no idea what brand it is.

Breeches: I am mainly looking for schooling breeches. I have irideon tights which aren’t bad for the weather, but they have an elastic waist that rolls and bothers me. I don’t necessarily like high waist to my belly button, but would like something that isn’t going to roll all the way under my stomach. I like elastic on the bottom.

I don’t have a very high budget so if you could keep that in mind when suggesting attire (ie: no $200 breeches) that would be great! Thanks everyone.

I know you said no $200 breeches, BUT lately I’ve been able to score used Trophy Hunters on ebay for $50-60. I just set a followed search for my size and “tailored sportsman” and another for my size and “trophy hunter” with a max price of $75. To me, they’re the most breathable fabric I’ve ridden in. I’m in Florida, so heat and humidity are trying to kill me.

I just picked up a pair of the kerrits ice fill britches on sale. They stay impressively dry in heat and humidity and are very comfy. I have ridden in them for several hours at a stretch.

I have a few Tropical Riders breeches/schoolers that I ride in. They’re pretty good. http://www.tropicalrider.com/

As far as breeches go, I feel your pain. All of mine are cotton except for the pair of FITS and the pair of Struck breeches I bought on ebay. Both the FITS and the Struck feel amazing on and let in plenty of air when I stood outside in the wind. However, I am saving them for shows, so I won’t be able to tell you anything about them for awhile - plus new, neither pair falls in your stated price point. All of the cotton ones I have are gross when they get sweaty, but the ovation pull ons are the grossest. The Devon Aire Versailles are the least gross, but are so thin that I have to wear Spanx underneath them in public, which defeats the purpose entirely (they get worn at home). The best compromise between comfort and coverage that I have is the Ovation Celebrity Slim Secret. They have some kind of finish or thread in the fabric that makes them stay dryer than the Ovation pull ons. Also they hit my waist in a good place (I can’t wear low-rise anything).

From feeling of them in the store, I think the Kerrits tights are probably pretty comfortable. I am too lumpy to feel comfortable wearing in them in any color other than black so I haven’t bought a pair.

Show shirts - I saw the a shirt at a tack shop that had old-school cloth neck, front, and cuffs, but mesh fabric on arms and on side panels. I am pretty sure it was the Ariat Triumph http://www.sstack.com/apparelboots_english-clothing_ratcatchers/ariat-ladies-triumph-show-shirt/

This appears to be a pretty good compromise between coverage and cling. My issue with them is where they are mesh, there is nothing soaking up the sweat, and if I was to get one, I will probably ruin the inside of my show jacket (I don’t have the figure for stretch/washable jackets).

I have an Essex CoolMax old-school cloth show shirt that I wear when I’m riding outside, to keep my forearms covered, and I love it. It was really expensive new; my sister gave it to me after she spilled coffee on it. There is something in the fabric that keeps if from getting / staying wet. I bought another one, new, for $25 on ebay and am saving to show in. I think there will be more to come on ebay since so many people want nothing but the stretch shirts.

The thing I don’t like about the Essex shirt is I think it’s too fitted in the waist for my figure. I prefer a straighter cut. The upside to the Essex is it actually has room for my chest and buttons in a good place across the chest, which is rare for me to find in a show shirt. I think Tailored Sportsman also made a coolmax shirt, and it was straighter cut. If I’m wrong about that, somebody correct me, because I have an ebay search set for the TS shirt (no hits yet though, so I may be wrong about that).

I know I set a price limit (which is honestly even higher than what I’d feel comfortable with), but I am open to hearing about any brands even if they are expensive new. It is good to have ideas in mind for what to keep an eye out for at the used tack sales.

The Kerrits I have looked at but I’m not a full seat fan so I’m worried that would bother me. I’ll try them on though. I’ve heard more than a few good reviews. I love my Irideon essential tights other than the elastic waist that makes me feel like a stuffed sausage.

Essex CoolMax sounds interesting. I’ve never ridden in long sleeves in the summer, seems counterproductive to me, but a lot of the ladies at the barn do so maybe I’ll try it out!

I have never used ebay either, but like that you can set what items you are looking for. Thank you for all the suggestions so far everybody.

I love my Ariat breeches. I also just bought an Ariat Sunstopper Show Shirt which is lovely.

Schooling? I love Kastel shirts.

I do like the icefil breeches and have several of the ice fil shirts too they both work well but after all day at the barn, it’s sort of like taking off a wet bathing suit

I highly highly recommend kerrits performance tights. They have a wider waist band which make them more comfortable. They have served me well this summer in our 100 degree Florida heat! They’re quite affordable and I believe Dover has some colors on $30 clearance right now!

For showing, I have one of the FITS Zephyr coats which I think are around $200 new but I have had insane luck and found 2 brand new with tags on Ebay for $99. They are mesh, and very very comfortable. I am in Southern Louisiana and trust me I feel your pain. Showing in this coat the first time was the first time in my life I can remember coming out of the ring and not dripping sweat. They are super stretchy though and I have found that going a size up helped me not to feel as “lumpy” in it.

For showing AA Platinum MotionLite Jacket and the FITS Zepyr.

Both excellent hot weather jackets. For shirts anything with air mesh, finner mesh fabric under the arms. (We actually have several on our site and I am happy to help with selection)

For breeches, look at fabrics that have Coolmax in them or that simply run thinner. For schooling the Horze Leah breech, Horseware Summer Denim, TuffRider or Equine Couture with Coolmax breeches. All are good. Tuffrider also makes a nice ventilated tight that is budget friendly.

This is probably the coolest shirt we have as the whole back is a vented mesh fabric (make sure to wear a sports bra as it is sheer).

Hope those options help. Kerrits also makes an ice-fill breech, we don’t carry Kerrits but I am a rider first and a store owner second so I will recommend those too.
