ATVs on our Property

Yes I trust him a lot, I’ve called him but he’s a farmer so he’s out until later likely.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. Helpful

Good luck!

Nothing you do will keep rude people out, if they do not want to stay out.

I think putting up your game cameras in hopes of getting better photos of who is trespassing is the best idea.

You can’t fence the property off because your farmer guy needs regular access. Sounds like the fields span both properties so putting a fence up will make it much harder for him.

So realistically all you can do to keep the trespasser out is post. Sure the game cams are great but they don’t keep the person out.

If you find where they are getting in, post a no trespassing and cameras in use sign. Put a sends instantly to your phone/cloud camera right above that sign, so you get a good long shot of their face as they stare up at the sign to read it. Better still, have some small, hard-to-read-from-far-away sign so they pause there a long time. Then take that picture to the police, if you need to go that route. Or show to helpful neighbors to see if they can ID the person.

We found the opening last night they were using, it wasn’t through my neighbours field so we were able to close it off. They are coming from a local road through another neighbouring field. Getting signs up this weekend.

I wonder if there are no trespassing signs that include the fact that this is crop land and damaging crops will lead to civil restitution.

Start with no trespassing signs, covers you legally. Some people have the idea that any land if fine for them to go on if not marked.

Try and find out where they are coming onto your property. A barrier will often stop them.

If those do not work if you can find out who it is it may be possible to just let them know not to ride on your property. In my area it is often teenagers that the thought of not riding on the land does not cross their mind.

No trespassing signs ALWAYS. That will CYA in the event of a liability issue in the eyes of the court. I would also put up some trail cameras or keep having your friend come out to see if you can identify who is trespassing on your property. If you can, I would approach them politely and tell them that it’s private property and that they are not welcome. You don’t need to justify it, but it may be beneficial to tell them you ride back there and that they will cause an accident eventually.

I would also find out where they are getting in. If it’s mostly fenced, I would spend a day off checking your fences, and property lines. You should be able to see where they are getting in.

I would also contact your local law enforcement to file a police report. That way if something does happen to you, or them while they are trespassing, you have much more legal recourse.

Also check in to how No Trespassing needs to be posted legally for your state in case something ever were to happen. For example part of my property boarders PA state forest and part MD that is in a land trust (aka it’s very tempting for folks to want to use my property as a cut through etc). The way that PA requires no trespassing marking is different from the way MD requires no trespassing markings

That’s good you were able to block their entry point; ATVs can do some serious damage.

I think signs might protect you from some liability, but they aren’t going to stop an ATV rider. They’re going to fast to even notice.

That’s a lot of tracks, I think they ride through there a lot. Ask all your neighbors, someone will know who it is. Just call them up- chat a bit and then say “do you know who has a red ATV and might be riding through my hayfield? I want to tell them to stay off the hay”. Maybe they will tell you who it is and maybe not but the message will be sent.

Yeah I’ve already asked them all, no one seems to know this person. My neighbour thinks they were in his field across the road too.

Part of that is our trails so it is well worn in some areas.

I’m glad you found where they were getting in, this will hopefully be the end of it!
