ATVs on our Property

My roommate was taking drone shots for me last night so I can start planning my XC course. Funny enough, there was someone way back on my property on an ATV. They drove through my hay fields, all around my trails, they were in a bunch of shots so they must have been ripping around all over.

Insurance issues aside, how do you deal with this? No trespassing signs? It’s about 60 acres of hay fields/trails. It’s mostly fenced but they are obviously getting in somewhere.

I don’t want them on my property for a multitude of reasons. I guess I was just lucky to catch them on camera otherwise I would have no idea.

Ill post pics shortly.

Anyone else have this issue?

Figure out who it is first and try to talk to them. Failing that, follow their tracks and block their access point.

I wonder how I could figure out who they are. Not anyone I know around here.

If you can determine who, I agree: talk to them first.
Also post No Trespass signs at the point of entry.
If you can’t determine who, take those drone pics to local police & ask how to proceed.

Hereabouts, to find out who it is, you’d post on the local community Facebook group. And someone would know, or know who knows, probably in a few hours.

If I can figure out who they are I will definitely just talk to them.

I guess I have to go back there more often and see if they are coming in often.

I can’t post on Facebook about where I live because of safety reasons sadly. That would be helpful, I’ve asked all my neighbors just waiting to hear back if they might know who it is.

we had to fence property lines

The rear of our property at one time was projected to have a street run through, the locals just assumed since it was proposed it was for real

Yep, just fence it off. ATVs riding through the hay field (you can see their tracks) are not going to be respectful no matter what you say to them. The act of riding through the field to start with proves it.

The person might be hunting that treeline, too. No way. Fence it.

Add me to the “fence it” group. If you can find where the opening is they are going through and you do fence it, just make sure it’s high visibility so they don’t go ripping though thinking that it’s still open and kill themselves. IIRC that happened around here a few years ago.

Yes, I forget what they call that. A “catch line” or something?

Regular tensile wire, WHITE, then go to town with knotting caution/danger tape to it.

Ugh this is stressing me out hahaha I feel so violated! I don’t know why it bothers me so much but it does lol

I guess first I will figure out where they are coming in. Then I can work on closing that off. I have some trail cams too so I’ll try and get those up also. My roommate and I are going back tonight to hang No Trespassing signs, and ride the fence line and see if we can see where they are coming in. The issue is our neighbor uses our lane way to get to his fields so I can’t block off all areas. I think maybe a “NO ATV/RTV/HUNTING” Signs at those openings. Or maybe “Area patrolled with cameras”. Something like that.

How often does your neighbour need to get back there? I’m thinking a gate with a lock that you both have keys too might be in order for a little while, unless it’s too much of a PITA.

Signs are a good idea. You could also get a trail cam that’s set up to immediately send pictures to your phone, they aren’t that expensive. And then you’ll be alerted when they’re on the property, may give you enough time to go find them and talk to them…or call the police.

That’s a good idea about the alerts.

He does our hay and his hay, and all his crops from our lane so it’s quite a bit he uses it. I would see if someone went up my lane but I’m wondering if they are getting in through his fields.

do not use a cable, the girl in center was killed riding a motorcyclist when she ran into a utility pole guide wire, it was unmarked but being unmarked really made little difference

we went with five foot high fencing

Not everyone can afford that. Tensile wire. 4 or 5 strand, white. It’s visible, particularly if you flag the top line.

Sounds like the OP can’t realistically do anything but post the property anyways, so I’m not sure what this thread even is.

I’m not surprised it bothers you. It would bother anyone, I would think. It’s your private property and you obviously take very good care of it. This person has broken into your land and is trespassing. Showing no respect for the land or for you the owner.
Anyone would feel violated.

I hope you can get rid of whoever it is. Do you trust your neighbor? Can you talk with them about it and maybe they can work together with you to stop the trespasser?

Can your friend with the drone come back and get a closer look. I’m not exactly saying “dive bomb” them.

Perhaps just knowing they can be seen would be enough to encourage them to ride elsewhere.

Huh??

Yes that’s what I’m hoping! We are going back tonight and getting the drone out again.

I’m so sorry that’s terrible :frowning: I would never put wire up.
