Looking for personal recommendations for a good place to trail ride within an easy drive of Auckland. I’m an intermediate level foxhunter/show hunter rider. September time frame. Not brave enough to try a foxhunt in the land of wire fences! More interested in seeing the beautiful country from horseback and enjoying a nice hack.
Define “easy drive”. 1 hour? 2? 4? Also, if you haven’t driven in NZ before, keep in mind that it will take longer to drive a given distance than it would in US (partly because of the country roads, and also because of Auckland traffic).
I would recommend getting as far from Auckland as possible  but realise that may not be helpful advice.
Given the reasons you stated, I would prefer a max drive of 2 hours one way.
Given your comments, I would prefer a max of 2 hours one way.
There is a trekking place at Pakiri Beach. I’ve never ridden there but grazed my horse at a friend’s place near the beach a few years ago and it’s a beautiful area. I also went on a trek on Waiheke Island earlier in the year which was lovely.
Although I don’t know of specifics, I suspect there are trekking outfits out on the west coast beaches (Muriwai etc).
