Australian stock saddles - sizing question

I was looking at some one Ebay and had a sizing question.

If I take a 16 in a Western saddle, such as my Abetta, BUT an 18 in A/P or C/C saddles, what would be the recommended seat size?

Would you order what size you take in a Western or English saddle?

Plus, any recommended brands that won’t break the bank?

I think English sizing, or somewhere in between the two. Down Under web should have that info. They also have saddles in all price ranges and take wither tracings when they make your saddle. You also get one free adjustment, I believe. Most of the Aussies on Ebay are the really cheap ones, so beware. I do have a cheapo that works well on my mare, but I got it at a local tack shop so as able to try it on.

Down under and Australian Saddle Co and Kates all have affordably priced saddles as well as deluxe ones and fitting charts. You probably do need to sit in a couple because your thigh length and some other factors can change that seat size. You should be able to post without hitting the poleys, ideally you dont notice them until that oh s**t moment when you need 'em and they help you stay in the saddle.

I use a 15in western saddle, 17in AP saddle, and a 17in aussie saddle.

BUT, I also have super-skinny thighs and no butt. :lol:

If you have any semblance of curves (because I sure don’t!), then I’d probably add one inch onto your english seat size.

Yes, I have curves, but in all the wrong places…lol

Seems to me the over girth strap would be irritating? Do you feel it, does it get in the way of posting? Does it rub? (the rider)

I’ve looked at the ‘half breed’ I think it’s called–it’s more western with fenders and poleys and a horn.

do these fit very round/flat backs with low wither?

I really like the look of this one and it gets your leg much farther back than most Aussie saddles.

The over girth causes NO irritation. You shouldn’t even know it’s there.

They come in different sizes to fit different horses. If you buy it from a reputible dealer you will be asked for a ‘wither tracing’ so the saddle can be fitted to ‘you’ horse before purchase.

If you get a ‘cheap’ one on Ebay you will likely get what you paid for. It will likely be made by people who are NOT acredited ‘saddle makers’, from substandard crappy leather and will not fit your horse. That’s why you see so many being ‘resold’ with adds that say "barely used’… What they mean is ‘we couldn’t use it becasue it wouldn’t fit me or my horse’… True story.

Yes, I have an Australlian saddle. Longreach Endurance from DownUnder. It’s not ‘top’ quality. But it’s OK, fits well and is ‘super’ comfortable. Not knockin Ebay; I actually got this saddle from Ebay! But I got one that had a ‘brand’ on it and I knew where and how it was made.
