automatic litter boxes? Best ones?

We just picked up one of those automatic self-cleaning litter boxes, and I must admit i’m not impressed. The scooping mechanism tends to fling sh*t outside of the box, and leaves bits behind, requiring me to clean up anyway, which sort of defeats the purpose of the mechanism.

What are your collective thoughts on self-cleaning boxes - do you like them? No? are there good ones out there? This one has a nice sized litter area, but that’s about the only nice thing about it.

I have a friend that uses this for her one cat and loves it:

I tried the littermate thing and found the box just TOO SMALL. So I have regular boxes and scoop daily. Sigh.

I HATE THEM!!!

I bought the super duper deluxe $100+ Littermate. PIECE OF JUNK. It woulld go off wth the kitty still in the box, not go off, the rake would get stuck or come out of its brackets.

It went to Good Will

GOOD RIDDENCE!!!

The only person I’ve ever known with one still had room that smelled like litter box so I never thought much of them and just do my cat’s litter by hand.

The only one I’ve found to work remotely well is The Litter Robot. But…it only works if you have smallish cats. With my old 20lb cat, he could not cram himself in there to save his life, lol.

I’ve had 2 LitterMaid boxes. Both stopped working within a few weeks (3 average sized cats with extra litter boxes that were being used as well).

A friend had one as well, hers lasted about 6 months but also broke (one cat household).

Have two Cat Genies and they are terrific. Period.

My fear is my cats would take one look and say NOT IN THIS LIFETIME and start peeing behind the TV or something.

I find using Tidy Cat and scooping every day or two (yes, I can go two days) keeps odor at a minimum. Better that than traumatized cats.

I feared the same thing. Cat Genie comes with great ideas on how to make the transistion. Two of ours adapted immediately, the third was a hold out (but he wasn’t wild about the regular little box either) and he succumbed to a neat, very clean box in a matter of days. I am totally sold.

I am on my second Litter mate in about 7-8 years. I also provide a regular litterbox. It seems mine prefer to pee in the auto one and poop in the conventional one.

I bought an old school LitterMaid on Ebay last year.
It was a set up with the LitterMaid Mega, the stupid tent (that is now in my attic) and a whole bunch of the litter trays. 80 bucks. brand new.

I LOVE IT!!

and it has been wonderful.
cat is 1.5 years old now.
I’m not going to jinx myself.
you do the math.

I have heard the new models are stinkers and break quickly.

Update - I’m still on the fence about it. It’s not the Littermaid one - I can’t remember the brand name. Hubby loves it, but I’m not sure why.

My cats are FASCINATED with it. They don’t do really more than pee in it - they use the other litterbox for everything else. But they DO like to watch it. The minute they hear the motor going off, I have two little kitty faces peeking at it and watching in awe/terror/whatever as the rake does its thing. I have noticed that using The World’s Best Cat Litter, mixed with some regular FreshStep, works better than anything else with this type of box. My cats, after two-three weeks, still aren’t using it the way they used the old one, though. It’s in the garage/rec room, and they used to LOVE using that one.

So, meh. not sure. I am totally anal about the litter boxes and I’m still scooping the automatic scooping litter box…???
