Awkward trainer issue

Using an alter, and limiting details for obvious reasons.

My trainer has been diagnosed with cancer and won’t be able to ride for some time. May or may not be up to teaching lessons during chemo.

Prior to informing me of the situation, Trainer A coordinated with Trainer B to cover training rides during A’s absence and asked if that was an acceptable plan. I agreed. So B is covering training rides, and I am riding on my own, or with A in a lesson when A is feeling well. All good.

The sticky part is that Trainer B is willing to provide rides gratis and asked me to pay Trainer A our standard training fee, but A doesn’t want to accept. I can’t figure out who to pay for those rides. If money grew on trees I would pay them both, but can’t really swing that.

Any thoughts?
And please send jingles for A <3

Mega-Jingles for A!
BTDT & post-diagnosis brain freeze is a Real Thing.
Very good of B to donate time for training rides.

Could you setup a checking account & deposit the fee for these rides?
Might come a time when A would appreciate either the cash or a gift purchased with it.

If chemo kicks her butt so daily living becomes a chore, maybe have meals delivered or spa time or? < you probably know what she likes.

Jingling for all 3 of you!

How nice of trainer B.
I’d talk to her and tell her you understand she wants all the money to go to trainer A, but maybe it would be better for everyone if it was split 50/50. Then trainer B is at least being paid (somewhat) for her time, and trainer A isn’t loosing all her income.

There could be another arrangement as well that you aren’t aware of, such as a behind the scene trade for board or even the sale/purchase of a horse.

I’d probably say to Trainer B “I’m sorry, but I can’t be in the middle of this. Trainer A does not want to accept my payment. I need to pay you for the work you are doing, and then you and Trainer A can figure out whatever arrangement suits you both.”

How about setting up a Go Fund Me type account for these payments to be deposited into? It doesn’t have to be a big public/publicized one but it gives a “neutral” location for the payments to go.

Trainer ‘B’ taking the payments as taxable income isn’t necessarily fair for them if they aren’t keeping the money.

Pay trainer A.
