Baby Greenie Support Group now open: Share Your Pain!

Duffy you and Gramento are AWESOME and those rust breeches are to die for. Personally, can’t fathom why they went out of vogue. But hey, what do I know. Have a pair hidden deep in the darkest part of my closet. They’re being kept for posterity, and the possibility that they will come back!

Serendipity, you do have your work cut out for you. Having no grass is something Calif. people deal with continually. We have a feed called All in One. An alfalfa meal, with molasses and several other hays ground up in it. Great for weight, less with energy boosters. This being feed in buckets, per horse, has helped with the lack of green plus seems to help the ones who are more tense.

Congrats Duffy.

Speaking of winds, has anyone seen Pooh fly by?

“GOD BLESS AMERICA”

Actually, it was quite a day! LOL, I’m sure Beezer noticed that I was finished riding Hammie before the fence work began. It was just one distraction after another while Beezer was riding. I believe the unveiling of the car cover was the crowning glory.

And our dad get a part-time job? Why, then how will he have time to email bad jokes, surf the Internet, and watch CNN and yell at the commentators?

I am riding my 2 year old (well, he’s nearly 3) but just at the walk. I have had the thumbs up by vets saying that walking them shouldnt harm them in any way. Of course there are noguarnatees. They also said walking a 10 year old doesnt have any guarantees. So in other words…go for it. Just dont push them, and let them tell you when they have had enough.

BNH, everyone can join! We’re always happy to have new members.

My greenie is on her second saddle. The one that fit her great when I bought her at age three, was totally outgrown by four and a half. So I agree with Merry and Bumpkin, your saddle may well be the problem.

“I wish that she would be a little more clear in all those things she’s telling me to do. I try to listen, but get so confused–and then someone drives in with a dog in the back of a pickup–I really don’t like dogs, and I can’t figure out why she doesn’t think we should be really concerned about what that dog might do to us. And do circles without falling on my inside shoulder? What’s that about? I could fall down! And we haven’t been to a show yet–what is that anyway? Sounds like a heart-stopping experience.” That’s Jake speaking–We only started riding him this summer, and he already takes care of me. My horse is a punk, but he is so cool.

Tigger was a GOOD BOY!

We have gotten winds up north, but not the Santa Ana’s…Mine thought for sure trolls were living under the road. Lord knows why, but guess it seemed like a good thing at the moment. Been over the road, a bazillion times. But noooooooooooooooooooooooooo, not today thank you very much. Good grief, snorting, staring, and in general being a total twit. At least the tail didn’t manage to be flung up and over his back. He just made alot of NOISE about the whole affair.

I just have to say that I am going to hopefully print out this entire thread! As one who has never ridden anything less than a fairly broke 5yo, I am now venturing down the path of getting my 3yo going w/t this summer. It gives me great comfort to know that everything, every single thing, that Rio has done this summer is “normal”, and that I know to expect as “normal” all of the things that he has yet to do that have been described here. God, please give us strength!

Just a reminder that things will change as we age whatever diet, exercise or spiritual path we choose. It is not the same. We are smarter because of experience…even if we forget where the keys are or just what it was we are looking for.
Pam I hope you are ok. E-mail me if you need anything.
As Bumpkin knows I preceeded her with a bad fall. As usual with my bad falls no jumps were involved. I flat got bucked off. Landed flat on small of back. Resulted in several weeks of muscle spasms that would never have occured in the past. Worst pain was when sitting still so no impact on mostly standing job-thank the good Lord for that.
I learned from last year’s bad fall-broken leather in the corner at a full gallop-that it is ok to stay off until you are healed mentally as well as physically. That is why we have trainers. Use them.

It’s cold here. I wanna go to Florida

As Friday winds down here in the office, I wanted to wish all who are showing this w/e with their greenies good luck and happy leads (w/no kicking at Mommie, Hammie)

Report back on Monday on how the shows went and I want to hear all the antics the spoiled rotten babies pulled on all of you.

DMK, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for RV.

Bumpkin, so glad to hear that your first ride back went really well.

Merry, yes, I’m laughing too. Thankfully, no significant damage done. (Thanks for the tip, DMK, next time I’ll reach behind. )

This has just not been my week. I’ve also managed to hit my forehead on a door (how often does that come up? ) and slip on some mud, fall into a tree and bruise my arm. Like BNH said, pretty soon by-standers are going to be handing me those cards that tell you how to contact the women’s shelter.

Ok, I had been reading this thread and feeling pretty good about my baby greenie…until last night, that is!

The weather was awful - blustering wind with dust flying everywhere, trees with their leaves shimmering in the air and blowing around. Add to this a jumping lesson going on, two people galloping around the arena and another 3 people added to the mix. Mickey did NOT feel like playing nice last night.

One horse he hates for some reason. Everytime he’s in the arena with this horse, he lunges at him or otherwise diverts his attention in his direction. The other horse that joined the queue is his playmate - they are very competitive and when Mickey sees him he just leaps in the air like a pogo stick! So I tried to push him forward to gallop and he ripped a buck…my friend is yelling “wooo hooo” as we’re flying through the air.

Add to that the girl that canters up our backside which results in some rearing, and you’ve got a lovely schooling session. It is really too bad because he started out so nicely!

So my wish for my baby green is that he wouldn’t be so affected by other horses…funny enough, he’s great in the warm up areas at shows…

“Oh Mickey you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey! Hey Mickey!”

Sorry DMK, but I did have to smile picturing the slide. Was doing that prior to this pad, continually. Professional’s Choice you say, hmmm, another to add to the pad collection. Becoming reminiscent of Merry’s bit collection. One must always be prepared.

Beezer the tank truly sounds like a real match. Anything with a kind eye, cain’t be all that bad. Do hope Tig’s vet visit will end on a happy note…

Oh, gee, so do you think we could all get our horses finished before we apply for social security? I can see the ad now: “Free with your AARP membership, one token warm-up round at your next horse show.”

“Friends don’t let friends eat fish tacos.”

First Elliot now Tess!! haha

I imagine more and more of us Baby Greenie club will be getting the “Jet Blast” take offs as the weather gets crisper.

I am not looking forward to the body clipping spirit.

That is the beauty of being out of it so long, we have come back to what we are use to being the “Latest Fashion” haha

“Have You Hugged Your Trainer Today?”

And yes, Shelbie does look put upon. Your farm is absolutely beautiful.

While you’re in a picture posting mood, whatever happened to Sophie Moose and Kimmie? (I hope I have those names right.) Since I love “small” mares, I’ve been waiting for a Kimmie update.

Oh, more drama with the baby… his pulled groin is still bugging him, so he has officially earned a winter vacation in the sunny central valley, starting next week. Argghhh. Maybe 2 months in a field will fix whatever it is that is broken.

So Splendid, a question for you… do you know anyone in the PV/Woodside area with a smaller, private barn that actually has “real” turnout? I’ve heard of people who board hacking distance from CTETA, but am not sure where. I’m ready to sacrifice the convenience of a covered arena and lights for the health and wellness of my boy…

Merry - I know of one branded WB bucking horse (they sent it to a cowboy who said that, while he COULD take the buck out, it might be worth more on the rodeo circuit) and another that had natural cow sense (the latter was also Hannoverian–maybe we’re onto something here). But, no reining horse.

Wouldn’t it be the final irony if I finally bought something that was supposed to be bred for dressage and jumping and I ended up with a reiner/trail horse??

Gosh you guys, thanks. He is just a tough cookie. Focusing is indeed his problem right now. I spent half an hour just doing serpentines today. Everytime he got strong, disinterested, or above the bit, I calmly did a downward transition, walked, and then started again.

I’m trying to de-sensitize him by going out on the trails more. Today we encountered a 4-foot long Santa banner hanging on a fence post, flapping in the breeze. Of course, I made Hammie go around and around it. I’m not sure if I de-sensitized him or horrified him! Here’s Hammie’s idea of a trail ride: walking/walking/walking/walking/walking really really really fast…
