For the past 3 days, my back button has been functioning very erratically. Sometimes I can exit out of a thread with 2, 3, or 4 clicks and sometimes I can never exit unless I scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on forums. I can no longer get back to my home page using the back button. I don’t understand what happened. It was never a problem before and it is only a problem in The Chronicle Forums.
I reported this on the 6th with the Safari weirdness thread.
If you hold the. Back arrow key (rather than just click it) you get the history drop down and I use that to navigate ‘backwards’.
Glad to know it is not just me.
Thank you very much.
I’m having the same problem with Safari, but only on my Mac Book Pro. No problems with going back when using the iPhone (that works perfectly)!
Isn’t that weird?
99% of the time when I hit the back arrow on the Mac Book, it just takes me to the top of the top of the same page I’m on - over and over again. Finally it will decide to work and actually go to the previous page (but that’s only after multiple tries).
Anybody have a clue what is wrong?
ETA - Thanks Where’sMyWhite. I just used your trick and it works. So for now that’s what I’ll have to do. Thanks again.
For me, iPad, MacBook, iMac
Talked to someone (not COTH staff) who thought it might be some jsp (I think it was) thing.
I haven’t tried turning off jsp yet to see if that fixes it.
I just tried turning off JavaScript and that “fixes” the problem. So, IMO, COTH is sending a JavaScript that is doing something unexpected with the history list.
Enable/disable JavaScript is in Safari -> Preferences under the Security tab.
You can disable it but then other things might not work as expected.
It isn’t just me?! At least I feel better about that. I’ve been having this issue on COTH with both iPad and MacBook. I don’t really want to turn off the JavaScript as someone mentioned, for fear it will screw other things up.
it’s an apple product, so it’s terminal! browsing on my iphone is the WORST.
I thought this was just me, too. Macbook air. I just click on the discussion forum link at the top of the page. Weird.
Just a heads up that we’re looking into this issue – thanks for reporting the problem!
Mod 1
Not just Apple…I’m having the same problem on my Chromebook using Chrome.
Same for IPad. Just happening for a day or two.
I have had to use Mozilla again for a few days, I could probably re-start my computer but everything else works fine in Chrome.
I reported this a while ago. It’s not just Safari. It’s google ads redirecting the page multiple times before taking you to your destination. Sometimes so many times you no longer have the history of the page you want to go back to stored.
No one ever bothered to respond to my thread on it.
Late yesterday seems like Safari was happy again so maybe fixed?

Nope. Just not a constant from google. It can be fixed, as it was fixed on other forums I go to which use google ads. Chronicle has repeatedly ignored it and pretended it didn’t exist, though. Kind of like on this thread.
