I cannot use the back button - and ONLY on this forum - never a problem with any other of my computer use - REALLY annoying especially when doing a SEARCH!! and I cannpt return to the list and have to start ALL OVER each time.
We’re sorry for the hassle. We’re actually very close to upgrading our forum software (about to enter beta testing with some users after fixing a few more formatting issues), so the issue may not be an issue with the new version of the software.
In the meantime, you could try deleting your cookies for the site and see if that helps any random “wonky-ness.”
Let us know if that helps ~
Mod 1
Mine is the same way, has been so for quite awhile. I have to hit the back button about 5 times before it actually works.
And it is only on the COTH site that this happens.
Clearing cookies did not help.
It’s because of the Google Doubleclick ads are filling your history.
Happens to me for a period each day, around 1-2 pm EST
Since we’re literally right in the middle of a software upgrade (we’re finished beta testing and will be upgrading active site this month), we’re going to ask that you be patient with us until the new site is active.
That way we can see if the problem persists with the new software, and we can save time and money troubleshooting for an old software version.
In the meantime, you can work around the problem by navigating around the site by using the links that appear at below the toolbar such as these for this thread:
Chronicle Forums > Technical Assistance > Help Forum > Back button not working
or navigate through thread pages using the thread page number links/arrow buttons at the top and bottom of the threads.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience. It’s a problem other sites are experiencing if you do a search, and it sounds like it’s related to a glitch between Google ads and Internet Explorer.
Thanks for your patience!
Mod 1
That’s what I’ve been doing since I can’t use the back button on either computer.
On my PC (Windows XP) because the button makes lots of click noises, but nothing happens until I hit the back button at least 5 times.
And on my iPad because with the last iOS (I’m still on iOS4), the back button takes me to an old page (from like 3 days ago), not the current one.
<Sigh>, I miss my back button!
I just started having this problem recently, only on the COTH forum. Always worked fine before.
I just started having this problem today, although it is sporadic. Sometimes it works, sometimes I have to click a few times and sometimes nothing happens at all no matter how much I click.
Getting worse
I have two computers, one with IE 8 and one woth IE 9.
Until today, I only had this problem with IE9.
Today, IE 8 started doing it- worse.
Previously (on IE9) there would only be 4 or 5 “googleads” in the history, so I could navigate back to the content page.
But today, there were about 20 “googleads” in the IE 8 history, and the content page wasn’t even listed.
I have been patient about this, but it is getting to be a MAJOR pain, especially combined with the bottom ads.
If it’s the same as my computer it’s actually being caused by the ads. The back button itself is functioning but googleads has filled your history with ad links. If you hit back enough times it will take you back to your previous page but its a big pain in the rear! It’s almost as annoying as the popup ads on every page.
I complained about this several months ago… grrrr
If you right click on your back button, you should be able to see the last “legit” address and click on that. Of course, the “wonderful” popup ad seems to produce so many googleads addresses that you may not be able to see any “Chronicle” addresses.

- of course the popup ad does this times 100 or more :dead:
Holy F–K there aren’t even that many ads on this page…
I sure hope tonight’s upgrade fixes this. Cross your fingers!
