Back on Track Back Pad

Hello all,

Does anyone have experience with the BOT back pad? I love the mesh sheet but sometimes it can be a bit too warm during the summer. The back pad looks like something that could be thrown on an hour or two prior to excercise in their stall…but wanted to hear if anyone has used it this way/liked the fit.

Thanks!

I have the back pad and the only thing I would question is leaving it on without supervision. If you are looking at the one I have there’s no way to secure it to the horse without a saddle. I do use it as a saddle pad while I ride, though I also have a regular saddle pad. I’ve never had an issue with my horse getting hot in the mesh sheet but 1) she’s very cold blooded and doesn’t overheat easily 2) she wears a fly sheet year round since she’s a paint and needs protection from the sun and it’s very similar to the BoT mesh.

It’s really thick, so I only use it in winter.

As far as securing it, it comes with a velcro strip to sew into a sheet. I finally sewed mine into a cooler, so I can put it on my mare, and then pull it out and use the cooler alone after riding. A simple surcingle should work as well to hold it in place for an hour or so.

It’s heavier than thever sheet, so I’d tend toward throwing the sheet on, not the back pad.

I’ve used it a lot. If it’s while I’m tacking up, I don’t secure it at all. Otherwise, I’ve got a surcingle strap that I can use to hold it in place.

I think it works best with a sheet or blanket over the top to get it warmed up. Otherwise, in our cold WI winters, it’s not really heavy enough to trap that much heat.

I love all the BOT products. I have the blanket/sheet which I throw on my old guy while I’m mucking out and sweeping, etc…by the time I come to groom him and tack him up, he’s quite toasty and it makes a difference to how he moves right away under saddle. I have the boots and the saddle pads as well and I think they DO make a difference. Have the quarter sheet, but not as happy with it as it doesn’t sit well on any of mine. Too slippery and just won’t conform to the shape of the topline. Everything else I’m super happy with. They aren’t cheap but they are worth it I think.

I throw the sheet on 45 min or so before I ride, even here in hot Florida. Under the fan in the stall it’s fine. Makes a difference.
