Back on Track Hock Boot Models 2017?

I’m looking to purchase a pair of back on track hock boots for my little PRE, and it seems like the models are different than the last time I looked at them. There is a normal boot with a hole over the hock, and a Royal boot with a hole over the hock, and a pad/quilt underneath that has no hole.

The Royal style looks more comfortable, but I wonder whether the padding will make it slip down easier? Ideally I’d like to use them without standing wraps below.

Anyone have any input?

Thanks!!!

I bought a pair of Back on Track hock boots in late 2016. My set had the holes over the hock with the quilting underneath. They stayed on very well in the beginning and then started sliding down his leg after several months. He wore them for quite a few hours a day so he may have helped their downward slide.

A fellow boarder had gotten a pair without the quilt, back when they only made the one style, and her horse wore them overnight once he was used to them. They’d either slide down, or we’d tighten them more to keep them up and they would rub. I’m not sure if they’ve redesigned the non-quilted ones since then (I believe Back on Track refunded her money, after months of use, because of the issues she had), but I purchased the quilted ones to try on my horse because of her experience. I haven’t used them yet though, as horsey has recently decided that all types of wraps on his hind legs are EVIL.

All that being said, I think I’d be prepared to use them in addition to standing wraps, to avoid the issues of slipping or rubbing. Perhaps after trying them alone first.

I have the older style, with the hole. I don’t use them overnight, I just put them on first thing in the morning when I’m feeding and my horse wears them for about an hour while I feed, let him digest, groom & tack up. I don’t have any problems with them sliding.

I haven’t played with the Royal variety but some horses do not like anything over the point of their hock. I also wonder if the quilting material would make it slide more. Personally I wouldn’t bother with these unless I was trying to reduce a capped hock (and good luck with that …)

When I bought the hock boots, they ran really small. Go up a size.

Thanks all! @retrofit I ordered the old style with the hole because I was thinking the same thing re: the padding being slippery. I’ll report back when they get here
