Badminton

It seems like that could be the final question on some sort of horse related trivia contest at some point.

Regarding the gentleman wearing his traditional attire for the jog, I’m glad that for once a man got to jog a horse in a challenging outfit instead of just the women doing it when they were trying to be fashionable. Lol.

There are hakama made specifically for riding horses so he may have been wearing that style. It’s called umanori hakama which means horse + riding/up on hakama.

Hmmmm, I’m thinking he should try riding his dressage test in hakama - that would be a sight to see!

Though it looks rather voluminous, it’s meant to be promoting ease of movement. Here, you see men doing all kinds of traditional sports in hakama, like mounted and unmounted archery and even martial arts. Samurai wore them as foot soldiers so they must be reasonably easy to walk and run in.

I’ll sometimes see men in hakama on the metro with their traditional bows in carrying cases, which is kind of cool. The longbows are massive!

(these gents aren’t in hakama, but you can imagine one of these bows on the subway )

Without COTH, I would never have known that it is difficult to sit in a taxi in a kimono. Thank you @FitzE!

Harry’s Meades Dad used to go out with Princess Anne.

Sorry, it did take an odd turn!

You’re wrapped up pretty snuggly which is enough to get used to. But not being able to sit back all day gets very tiring. Good for your core, I guess.

I’m sorry I didn’t get to watch Badminton this year. Just too much going on this weekend to be up in the wee hours to watch it from here. I’d love to go back again. Maybe in a couple years when the bairns are in uni, I’ll treat myself!

I just saw a post from Georgia Bartlett who was not accepted at first jog. Apparently the vet in the holding box recommended the horse be accepted upon reinspection. Interesting to hear that the vet’s opinion is just one factor in the decision and not determinative.

“A tough old day not being given the opportunity to compete at Badminton for one final time with my horse of a lifetime who is fit, sound, looking a million dollars and was recommended by the FEI vet as being good to go upon re inspection”

Not to deviate too much, but being in kimono all day with an obi sounds like my worst nightmare.

context: opera costumes. 4 hours was more than enough for me.

That would be so cool if hakamas turned up for dressage tests!! We see other formal wear make an appearance.

This happens very often in the hold box in my experience. Vets will palpate and hoof test, etc and not find anything. A definite part of the inspection is about presenting your horse correctly.

This makes me really appreciate Jennie Brannigan’s comments after her horse got spun at Kentucky. She didn’t aggressively or passive-aggressively disagree or complain about the decision. (I’m also recalling past reactions from riders after experiencing this admittedly tough situation saying things like ‘but he’s just a little foot sore’ or posting on SM videos of their horse jogging around on grass supposedly sound). JB just took it on the chin, and said she was embarrassed because she considers herself a horsewoman above all else. I really admire her for that.
