Badminton

Just starting to watch dressage now.

Anyone have any idea why Oliver scored so low on his last halt? The horse was immobile and he did salute, was it because he didn’t turn his head and salute at the other judge?

You don’t have to salute at all 3 judges, he would not be penalized for that.

I just tuned in (West coast) and was surprised to hear of Ballaghmor Class’s poor score. But he is getting older and I wonder if that plays into it.

Having now looked at the scores, does anyone feel that the judges are marking a bit harsh? Or were the tests deserving of the marks?

Eventing Nation’s headline earlier: “Townend takes lead on Tough-Judging Day” - that answers my question!

His horse’s off hind was still not flat on the ground when his others were during his last halt. Looked like he stood with that leg cocked a little (to me.) There was only a slight glimpse of it though.

I was watching grace taylor’s test this morning. The announcers were talking that it might put her in the top ten. When she finished they said she was tied for 14th. I just got back and looked at the standings and she is listed at 35th or so. I looked at the individual marks and her last canter change was showing 1’s. Neither announcer commented anything negative about the change.

Anyone have an explanation?

She had a 4 for the preceding half pass too. I wasn’t able to watch, but any chance she did the change way too early and therefore “didn’t complete” the change at M?

from H&H;

Can someone give me a quick walk through? I signed up for a USEF fan membership to watch KY. I understand there is an additional fee for Badminton. Do I pay that to USEF or CMH? And what ungodly hour do I need to get up tomorrow to watch live? Or does paying for Badminton mean I can watch it on replay?

Sorry, I just know someone here will know the answers faster than I can figure it out myself (while I’m working, lol)

They’ll send you in the right direction. You won’t be paying USEF.

Can you please ask in the Badminton - Clipmyhorse thread, this thread (I hope) can stay on the actual event.

I just watched Oliver’s test, having skimmed through approximately 5 others from today. He definitely had a smooth “clean round” type of test.

Bettina Hoy’s comments were interesting, she noted (as I did when he was circling the outside at the beginning) that his horse was overbent in the canter “but he keeps the back supple”.

Dressage judges have so many things to keep track of and if they favour one aspect over another (e.g. supple horse with accurate movements vs. poll highest point at all times), that can be a difference of 0.5 to 1 mark on each movement when things are going right. When things are going wrong…

It will be interesting to see if the rest of the field is able to even up with the two leaders with the large point difference over the XC and SJ. Last year’s Badminton was certainly exciting for spectators with the jumping phases having so much influence - I hope that it is again this year. I attended KY three-day and it was a bit disappointing that the result was a foregone conclusion, barring disaster, from day 1.

I really appreciate her commentary. It’s spare and precise.

Was there briefly another German commentator, a man, yesterday? I liked his commentary, too, especially when he said, blah, blah, blah, “…let’s watch,” and then John Kyle waited about seven seconds before bursting out with more commentary.

n.b. I might’ve dreamt this. It’s been a long week.

Being that overbent for most of the canter should be dinged more than 0.5 though, the mare’s chin nearly touched her chest a couple times and she looked very strong occasionally- he managed it but it’s still a major fault. Also imho, his final halt was as bad as the one he was heavily dinged for on his other horse. Then one rider got a 1 for a late change I think, while Jonelle Price got a 5 for a half pass that didn’t really happen. Just odd random low scores here and there that added up to a strange end picture. I’d have expected quite a few more in the lead pack all within a couple points then a smaller gap to the next cluster: maybe 3-4 points but not 7-8.

I am trying to follow on EN, but the thread hasn’t opened. I am sure they have started by now. Anyone else?

6 horses have started, two clear with time, two with one run out and time, one retired after a run out

thanks for that. I do not understand why EN isn’t up yet. I usually follow them, and they haven’t started yet.

Gemma clear and one second under the time!!!
