April 4, 2012 Courier-Journal “Trainer Bob Baffert back at work after suffering heart attack” (abridged)

Baffert, whose wife, Jill, and young son, Bode, were in Dubai with him, said he’s a bit tired but otherwise feels pretty well. He admits he has worried more about his horses than himself, going big on red meat and light on exercise.

Jill Baffert said the heart attack changed their perspective. For instance, they now realize there are a whole lot worse things than not going to Churchill Downs with a major contender for the May 5 Kentucky Derby.

“He was very lucky,” she said. “A lot of things happened in his favor that day.”

For one thing, Baffert did not have the heart attack on the long flight from Los Angeles. It was early the next morning. In fact, Jill credits Princess Arabella’s eight-length victory in New Mexico’s Sunland Park Oaks for saving her husband, because he was awakened by congratulatory text messages at about 3 a.m. Dubai time.

Baffert had not felt well the day before. After waking, he said it felt as if someone was pressing at the base of his throat. His left arm started hurting, he became sweaty and he threw up.

Jill called their friend and client Bernie Schiappa, the co-owner of Dubai World Cup contender Game On Dude. Emergency medical personnel were called.

Once Baffert got to American Hospital Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed made sure the two-time winner of the Dubai World Cup got the best care possible.
