Baffert hospitalized in Dubai

Daily Racing Form: 3-26-12 “Bob Baffert said to have heart attack in Dubai”

Trainer Bob Baffert had a heart attack early Monday morning in Dubai and is resting comfortably in a hospital there after having stents inserted into two arteries, according to Bernie Schiappa, a co-owner of Game On Dude, who is scheduled to run on Saturday in the $10 million Dubai World Cup.

Baffert was feeling ill late Sunday night and into Monday morning, Schiappa said in a telephone call from Dubai.

“Bob had a heart attack,” Schiappa said. "He had two blocked arteries. The main one was 100-percent blocked, the other 90 percent. He had two stents put in one artery, one stent in the other.

“Sheikh Mohammed,” Schiappa said, referring to the ruler of Dubai, “has gone out of his way and got the best help to take care of Bob. He will stay in intensive care until Tuesday, and is expected to get out of the hospital on Thursday. He will have to stay eight to 10 days to recover before he can fly home.”

Schiappa said Baffert was at the barn on Sunday. Baffert and his wife, Jill, were scheduled to join Schiappa and his wife for dinner, but Baffert begged off and went to sleep early. Several hours later, Jill Baffert called the Schiappas and said her husband was not feeling well.

“We called 911 and the paramedics came right away,” Schiappa said.

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Additional info from the UK-based Racing Post (Mar 26):

… suffering an early-morning heartattack at the Atlantis Hotel, where he was staying before Saturday’s World Cup meeting.

Following his admission to hospital, both horses exercised at Meydan under the supervision of assistant trainer Tim Yakteen.

Speaking to the Racing Post from Dubai, Bernie Schiappa, one of the owners of Game On Dude, said on Monday: “Bob had a heart attack at 3am and was taken by paramedics to the hospital.”

It is too early to know whether Baffert, who had no previous history of heart trouble, will be fit enough to watch his runners in action at Meydan.

“If everything goes well Bob will be discharged from hospital on Thursday and then we will take things from there,” Schiappa added.

Hope He is Feeling Better and “BACK ON TRACK” ` SOON ```

HOPING BOB B. IS FEELING BETTER AND 'BACK ON TRACK’ SOON ```

Oh my! Jingles to BB!!! Hop he is okay.

Jill better telling Chantal to either win real easily or finish up the track. If Game on Dude gets involved in a nose for nose stretch duel they’re going to need to have the defibrillator on standby for Bob!

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

From what I’ve read it sounds like Sheik Mo was really on the ball to help out… he all but scrubbed-in for the surgery.

An update from Paulick…

Jill Baffert said her husband never lost consciousness. “In fact, he talked to Tim (Yakteen) to be sure to back Game On Dude up to the five-eighths pole and work him a half-mile and also be sure to work The Factor. He was still training his horses going into surgery.”

Best wishes to him for an uncomplicated recovery.

Oh dear, how terrible. Wishing the best for him.

That’s how you know a pro…best wishes for a speedy recovery to Bob.

What are these Paulick reports?

What are these Paulick reports?

I’ve heard you all talk about them & looked briefly at a few but:

Is Paulick a person named Paulick?

Who does he write for?

Are the reports valid?

What is his background?

Someone please fill me in. Thanks.

Wait a minute…ok I’m wishing Bob the best and speediest recovery…but…when did Tim Yakteen go to work for him?

…when did Tim Yakteen go to work for him?
How timely of a question: 3-26-12 Yakteen rejoins Baffert’s team for Dubai World Cup

Though Yakteen has been training on his own for eight years now, Baffert has summoned his former assistant to assist in his quest for a third Dubai World Cup with Game On Dude this Saturday at Meydan.

Yakteen’s presence took on even greater significance when Baffert suffered a heart attack Monday morning.

Though Yakteen worked for Baffert when Silver Charm won this race in 1998, he accompanied Captain Steve here in 2001 when the World Cup was a mere $6 million.

“He wanted to join up the old team,” Yakteen said of Baffert.

And just a day after the two-prong attack on racing by the LA Times and NY Times is this from the West Coast paper: Bob Baffert resting comfortably after heart attack - accompanied by a semi-rare photo of him sans darkened glasses. (Worn due to severe dust allergies.)

wait–they have the 911 system in Dubai? I thought that was just the United States.

Here is more info than you wanted but … 9-1-1 is the emergency system for the North American Numbering Plan so it applies to Canada too.

Other countries and regions have similar type systems, but do not use the numeric sequence of 9-1-1. So if you’re in Copenhagen, Denmark you’d dial 1-1-2 and in Brisbane, Australia you’ll dial 0-0-0.

For the UAE the police emergency number and ambulance number is 9-9-9.

Yes, she is saying “911” because that is equivalent of saying (to an American audience) “I called the emergency services dispatcher”, but a bit shorter. They did not literally dial the numbers 911.

Update - Associated Press 3-27-12 - “Bob Baffert moved out of ICU”

Trainer Bob Baffert was moved out of intensive care a day after having a heart attack and is expected to be released from the hospital by Thursday.

Schiappa said it was likely Baffert will go to the track to check on his horses once he’s released.

“He would probably come here now,” he said. “If he had his way, he would walk out now but they won’t let him. He is under really good care and he knows he has to listen. He is handling it well. He is in very good spirits as well.”

Baffert on Tuesday tweeted “I want to thank my wonderful wife Jill, who convinced me I was having a heart attack and called paramedics.”

Schiappa said he expected Baffert will be able to handle the stress of race night.

Game On Dude, no stranger to tight finishes, is among the favorites for the 14-horse Dubai World Cup along with So You Think, Royal Delta and a trio of Japanese horses led by Transcend, which finished second last year.

“I think Bob can take the stretch call,” Schiappa said. “He told me that the doctor will be at his side just in case he keels over. That is Bob’s humor, as you probably expect. But that is what he said.”

Bob Baffert’s Twitter Account

Which is also the emergency in the UK.

More assurances (although I don’t see any of them from doctors) that Bob Baffert will be there on Saturday at Meydan Racecourse:

“Is the sky blue? Are you kidding me?” Schiappa said Tuesday morning when asked if Baffert would be able to make the races. “You’d have to drag him out of here. Trust me, he’ll be here. He’ll probably be sitting next to Sheikh [Mohammed].”

The connect the dots of how Sheikh Mo learned of BB’s heart attack: Mohammed had been alerted to Baffert’s condition by Rod Daniels, who works as Godolphin Racing’s blacksmith. Daniels was told by Tim Yakteen, who is overseeing Baffert’s horses here.
