Balancing Calcium/Phosphorus - Coolstance Copra Feed

Hello All!

I am planning on starting to feed coolstance copra to my gelding. I have been using feedxl, and everything is in the green and balanced in terms of vitamins/minerals in his other supplements, but I just want to make sure he’s getting enough calcium with the high phosphorus content in copra…

From what feedxl says, he will be getting 27.5 grams of Phosphorus a day, and 46.7 grams of calcium a day.

So, should I up the calcium even more or is that enough?

TIA!

That gives you a ratio of ~1.7:1 for Ca:P, which, for an adult horse, falls within an acceptable range.

Thanks for helping me out with that math!

In addition, 46.7 grams of calcium is well beyond what an 1100lb horse in heavy work needs (but not enough if it were a nursing mare).

27.5 grams of Phosphorus is enough for that 1100lb horse in no work, but not really enough once there is work. For work levels, you need 30gm (light work) to 40gm (heavy work).

So if anything you might need to add some Phos. How much, depends on the weight and workload of the horse. And if the horse is too much heavier than 1100lb, you might just need to add some of both.
