Yes - it’s very bitter tasting so the horse might not appreciate it much. I believe it gets absorbed through the mucous membranes, so it enters the system faster than the oral paste.
Yes.
Yes! My vet recommended, and it worked, mixing sugar free jello with it. What I did was; get a cup and dump a pretty hefty amount of the jello powder in and add a little water. You don’t want a slurry but you want it pretty strong jello taste. Draw up the proper amount of banamine in an oversize syringe, remove the needle then suck up the jello mix with banamine. About 10cc of jello mix did the trick, and squirt that in their mouth. My horse loved the strawberry variety, and actually thought hard about asking for a second dose!! He was on banamine for a few days and this was the only way to avoid a fight. Good luck!
Thanks all.

I never thought of mixing it with Jello! That’s so smart. I had a horse on banamine for several consecutive days this spring - she was an angel and never thought of refusing to take it, but would make the most disgusted face afterwards, so I always rinsed her mouth with a big syringe and warm water afterward.
I mix mine with instant vanilla pudding mix and salt. Salt was recommended by a vet to combat the bitterness. I pour a little pudding and salt in the dose syringe and squirt the banamine in and mix it right in the syringe. My horse (who HATES oral meds) is okay with this mixture.
Absolutely
Given sub-lingually it acts as fast as IV.
The jello idea is great if you need to dose more than once. :encouragement:
I kept the cup with jello mix in the fridge for several days. You don’t want to pre mix it with the banamine because it tends to get clumpy when mixed, but without the banamine it will sit just fine for a week.
I also used straight jello powder to get him to take his SMZ tabs, all 10 at a time. I just put them in with his grain, broken in half and liberally sprinkled the powder over it all, worked like a charm. Although he was particularly easy to medicate in general.
Never thought about using pudding and salt but it makes sense. Whatever gets it down the hatch sounds great to me.
I add the squirt-able flavor water mix and add it to the banamine. Draw up your syringe and use the needle to add the mix, then remove needle and squirt in mouth.
every horse is different Tang powder also made a good flavor slurry.
try the tasty base first , without the Banamine. Make it a treat.
remember horses like minty herbs so dont overlook strong peppermint tea with sugar
My vet warned about using the injectable squirted in the mouth because it is very caustic to the esophagus. Besides the fact that it tastes terrible. He had been reading research on how hard it was on their esophagus. I have used it that way but now I am not sure I will again. Luckily I haven’t had to use any for a few years.
Why not use banamine paste? You can warm in hot water or wrap a couple of “hot hands” hand warmers sround it for 5 min to soften in winter…
I prefer sub-lingual as it acts much faster than paste.
5min vs 25
If my horse is in pain, I want relief ASAP.
@SusanO valid advice to consider for repeated or daily dosing. I generally use banamine for colic symptoms, so it’s a one-time & done.
Cost and speed of onset?
Yes…both. The plan is to just have some on hand. Same reason as 2DogsFarm. Likely to be a one dose thing. Anything past that would have rapid vet intervention.
100ml of injectable is 1/2 the price of the paste. Will the difference break me? No but the idea (fingers crossed) is that it will be tossed out in it’s entirety when it is expired so less $$ invested and discarded.

Great idea on the powder mixers! We always have Gatorade powder on hand and I never thought to try that.
I always have maple syrup on hand - the real stuff - and will draw some up after pulling the banamine in. I rarely have to use it, but recently needed to twice a day for 5 days for an eye issue, and this helped immensely. I also followed it up with a 2nd syringe with just some maple syrup in, just 5cc or so, enough to help get rid of the taste.
I can tell it works because before I started doing that, she wanted absolutely nothing to do with a favorite treat. After doing that, she gobbles them right up.
Totally no reason to not want to save pennies here and there when you can, because while one-time deals don’t break you, things do add up over time
