My poor lab tore her achilles. sadly surgery failed so she is in a brace which tends to cause a small rub sore on her anterior hock. vet has ordered special brace from Poland which will alleviate problem, but it’s several wks away. meanwhile, everytime I try to wrap the hock, the telfa pad which covers sore slides down her leg and the vet wrap irritates wound.
How do I keep the telfa pad from sliding down?
Tubigrip or Paw flex bandages are the answer! They work great.
I have both but they dont work. imagine an open wound on front of hock. telfa pad (which I need to cover wound) wants to slide down the leg because leg narrows below hock. I cover telfa w vet wrap but even that slides. I’m looking more for a technique.
I wonder if you wrap below the hock with gauze and vetrap, and then wrap the sore, on top of/over that, if it would help keep things in place? Sort of like doing a stack wrap on a horse?
On those I wrap the whole leg, from
The ankle to above the hock. Like a standing wrap on the lower part then gauze on top then a tubigrip over the whole thing.
maybe if I do that, I can tape the telfa to the lower wrap, it tends to slide down as soon as I go over it w vet wrap. then go up and around the hock. thanks. great suggestion
the pawflex I saw was just a big tube. I went back and found some specifically for hock. bought them, hope they work. thanks for suggestion
What I do on a horse is put a turn of very good stretchy adhesive tape (Conform or Elasticon), one above and one below the area to be wrapped. Put it on not too tight and press/warm it with your hands to ensure good adhesion. These bands stay on during wrap changes. Then apply your daily wrap and adhesive tape the top and bottom to your permanent bands. When removing the daily wrap, use care to not disturb the permanent bands. Good luck and hugs to you both!
Cover the edges of your vetwrap in elasticon.
does the elasticon pull off fur when you finally remove it?
Peel it gently with the hair, not against. If you tape the bandage directly to the skin and replace the tape every day it does cause irritation and hair loss but by leaving the top and bottom pieces on for as long as they last you minimize that. The only other way to keep a bandage on the hock is a stack wrap and I don’t know if that would work on a dog. Certainly more cumbersome.
Back on track has a hock brace.
on a side note: I have used their products for my broken bones and torn soft tissue. They are great. This will also help aid in healing.
