Banderas Temperament

Hi all,

I am currently shopping for a younger, green horse and I have come across quite a few Banderas offspring that seem like what I am looking for. My concern is that with the limited exposure I have had to Banderas babies, I wouldn’t necessarily call any of the individual horses I have met ammy friendly for the most part. I also know horses out of the same dams with different sires that I would call more ammy friendly. I am an amateur looking to do most of the riding on my own, so I am looking for something that is going to be fairly forgiving. I love Banderas’ type and the foals he is producing and they all seem to be great movers with jumpers. I would be interested in hearing other people’s experiences with Banderas offspring in regard to their temperament. Feel free to PM me if you are more comfortable with that!

If that is your opinion why are you looking at quite a few Banderas offspring? Move onto something else. It is a flag for me when a brand new poster comes on this board with negative advertising for a stallion. Not intending to bash the OP
unnecessarily, but it strikes me as odd. A lot of different factors go into a young horse’s temperament.

I am absolutely not looking to bash Banderas, as I said I have had quite limited exposure to his offspring and am looking to hear the opinions of other who have had more experience with his babies than me. I love his type! I am considering Banderas offspring because they are everything else that I am looking for. IME they have been excellent movers and jumpers, which is also very important to me as a hunter/jumper prospect, but I still am looking for something that is or will end up being ammy friendly. I apologize if the OP was worded too strongly!

PM’ed you.

OP - I realize I came on rather strongly so apologize as I think tht it was not your intention.

I’ve trained 4 Banderas, they all jumped really nicely, and have decent gaits too. The dam was a big factor. All 4 were slight varying in temperament but they are still similar. They are smart, but athletic, and spooky, they all shared those traits. The really good ones were smart enough to trust their riders and persevere through their fear. I only had 1 around longer that a few months. She is still in the barn, she is a very pretty mare who can jump really well, and is a beautiful mover, but I wouldn’t call her a dead head at all. She is ridden by my ammy student, but she is a capable rider. She is currently being ridden in Eventing.

Thank you to the people who messaged me and commented on this thread. I tried one today that seemed like the coolest greenie ever. He was pretty behind the leg, and on the looky side, but seemed to be very ammy-friendly for how green he was. He was also very fancy and very pretty. He is pretty behind on his training for his age though, so that might be the deciding factor in whether we pursue him further or not, but it is absolutely not because of his temperament. He had a very lovely temperament and personality and has been ridden by an amateur since he had 60 days on him.
