Barbaro ~ America's Horse

Update 1113: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (wednesday night). Mrs. Jackson called, and she had just received a call from Dr. Richardson. Thanks, Alex.

With Michael and Peter in Florida, the Barbaro updates will slow; don’t panic!!! We should all take this as a great thing.

Updates will be posted daily, but they may be fewer and farther apart. It’s all good, however!

For Fancy ~

I did ask Alex if there would be pictures, and here is my reply:

“I am not sure of the status of picture taking is. I am sure it is something that they are considering. cheers, alex”

He is amazing, his team is amazing, and Mrs. Jackson is amazing. What a gracious thing for her to do to give us Barbaro lovers updates on his condition.

VB, please tell Alex to pass on to Mrs. Jackson that my daily Barbaro updates continually restore my faith in the goodness of humans and the possibility that hope can become reality.

You, VB, and Alex are beacons.

Vineyridge, consider it done.

VB, this is just incredable news! Wow, I am so glad that it looks pretty good for Barbaro. His owners are really amazing people. Thank you for keeping us updated. I too can’t wait to see pictures of his leg.

Beautifully said, vineyridge. I think that’s what has captured all our hearts–the possiblity that hope can become reality.

Friday ~

This may be the only update for Barbaro today. As things slow down (in a positive way) the posts will, too.

Another comfortable night for Barbaro. With the weather predictions as they are, he may not go outside today.

Absolutely!!!

Barbaro’s recovery is just a wonderful example of human kindness, positive attitude, phenominal veterinary care, and the power of pray when so many join together in a strongly positive way for the sake of a life!

Go Barbaro!

Do they have facilities to hand walk him in on the days he can’t go out, which are going to be more numerous now that winter approaches?

Thanks again VB for all the updates. On days when you post late I assume no news is good news.

Still no update, which is to be expected.

No news is good news!

Great question! I also wonder how Mrs. jackson will cope with gettting him his grass now that it’s winter? She’s such a resourceful woman–I wouldn’t put it past her to grow an entire green house of grass just for the Big Horse.

Update 1120: I just called Mrs. Jackson and Barbaro had another comfortable night (thursday night).
This morning was a little dreary (but warm), but it does seem the rain is now really starting to move in. Tim has a runner this afternoon at Laurel (Gatornation) so hopefully the weather is not too aweful. I rode a couple of horses on the new synthetic track this morning (Tapeta). It just simply feels good underneath you, and it is very consistent. It seems everyone’s feedback remains positive, although a few have decided to wait to provide a more concrete verdict when we get some cold weather. Anyway, so far so good for sure. Michael Dickinson was again at Fair Hill to observe and get direct feedback.
Yesterday I mentioned that horsehats had a new Barbaro hat (update 1115): Barbaro Fund Hat. I noted the hats were limited edition, here is more detail (comment from superfecta 2:56pm):

In case you were wondering about the Barbaro hats, they are making 400 and we’ve already reserved 50 of them here at work, so ordering sooner rather than later is the way forward.
Thanks, Alex.

Saturday Morning ~

Here is the Barbaro “Life a Series of Small Steps” in China!
A “Fan of Barbaro” had this letter published: Letter: Save horses from slaughter. Feel free to comment.
I believe the Barbaro update today won’t be until late in the day.
Thanks, Alex.

VB Thanks again for the updates - this is the first thread I check in the morning when I log onto the BB.

It is nice to know just how he is doing day by day. Who knows, maybe one day one of us will get lucky enough to have a little Bobby running around…

VB have you heard anything about ALex shutting down the other site? I do not know what happened but will that affect our daily reports?
These up dates as they get further apart is not lack of interest just less to say…NO news is good news… wish we could see pictures of the resected hoof and how it is growing in…what are the chances of the right hand now developing issues with the cast and splint off? is he full weight bearing and equal?
An idea? could they walk him on the diagnostic treadmill if he is stuck inside due to weather? Movement will definitely help that hoof grow…JMO

Keep those candles burning…

I was at the Thoroughbred Charities Auction last night at Keeneland, and got to see and hear the Jacksons speak. They got a standing ovation. We all watched Barbaro’s maiden race victory on a big screen, and the Derby. It still gives me a lump in my throat every time, and everyone was cheering when he won. Mrs. Jackson spoke beautifully, saying the last year had been a “game of Follow the Leader, and the leader was Barbaro.”

This was my first such an event, it was amazing. SO much money was raised for the charities, I had donated a painting (which sold for just under $1000, woohoo!), and it was just kind of a surreal experience!

Update 1126: When I spoke to Mrs. Jackson yesterday, she was on her way to Kentucky. Of course I should have known why, but had forgotten! Here it is: Auction benefits equine charity. Thoroughbred Charities of America’s annual event had moved to Kentucky for the first time this year. The article includes a nice photo of the Jackson’s and the following excerpt:

Gretchen Jackson said it had been “an incredibly emotional year” for her and her husband, who live five minutes from the New Bolton Center where Barbaro is being treated. She visits him a couple of times a day, “just to see how he’s doing.”

Sometimes when she’s feeling sad, she sits in the stall and talks to him, she said. “Just being around him is very calming,” Jackson said.
The Jacksons and the “Barbaro team” of doctors and nurses from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine were honored last night. Accepting for the school’s New Bolton Center was dean of Penn Vet, Joan Hendricks.
“Through and through a young stallion, a handful,” Hendricks said of Barbaro. She described the look in his eyes after the injury: “If he hadn’t had the bright eyes, everybody would have stopped.”

The only part Alex is eliminating is the forum and discussion sections. Never fear.

Regarding the leg:

I had posted a few days ago that there will be pictures of Barbaro’s leg, now that the cast is off. We aren’t sure when those will be available, but they are coming!

Barbaro Vigil 7pm December 2nd.

Spare a thought and a prayer for Barbaro. Great to keep this up!
