I wandered over too, when I saw this on Off Course. Was so hoping the downward trend from this weekend could be reversed.
so, so sorry.

“We are blessed to have seen this champion in our lifetimes”
Very well said Knowonder.
RIP Barbaro.
Run free big horse and hugs and prayers to all who loved him.
Well, brave Barbaro, you’re galloping in green pastures now.
God bless Baby, sleep well, you’ve earned it, now it’s time to rest. You will always be loved
This story of courage, heart and hope will not be forgotten.
God speed to you Barbaro. May you graze on all the wonderful green grass and have some fun races with your newfound friends across the Rainbow Bridge. Your ‘family’ here are all mourning the loss of your last race that we know you tried so hard to win. If all the candles that we had lit would have helped, you’d be the winningest horse in history! We loved you, we pulled for you, we prayed for you!
God bless your owners, the Jackson’s, your veterinarian, Dr. Dean Richardson, your trainer, Michael Matz and his assistant, Peter, and your jockey, Edgar Prado, and everyone else that had a hand in helping you these last 8 months for doing everything for you that possibly could be done.
You taught a lot of people a lot of things. Your courage and your heart exemplify everything that thoroughbreds stand for!
VirginiaBred and Alex, may I extend to you and some others many, many, many thanks for all the wonderful updates from day one about Barbaro. It allowed us to come to one spot and find continuous updates and hope.
Bless all of you!
So sorry. Thank you to VB, Alex, and everyone else who shared the story with the rest of us. I cannot help but believe Barbaro as well as his people, felt blessed and strengthened by the outpouring of love that came his way thanks to the openness of his “team.”
ts you are an ignorant, obnoxious, overbearing, insufferable and heartless pig.
Not the right call to come off like you did on these sad developments. I hope the owners can somehow be spared your holier than thou venom. Maybe you should make your own decisions with your own animals, and keep cruel, thoughtless and grandstanding opinions to yourself. You’re about as far away from the situation as anyone other than the owners and NB.
It seems as if they acted as they said they would, when and if the time came. He fought the good fight, my guess is that he let them know.
Nothing like kicking someone when they are down…or dead.
My apologies everyone, RIP B.
Thank you for everything VB. I only hope that along with the valiant effort of the veterinarians, the willingness of the owners and the extraordinary gallantry of this horse, great strides will have been made in not only how to treat devastating orthopedic injuries but laminitis as well.
Happy pain free cantering Barbaro!!

Actually, I hope that they don’t. I like the thought of a private place where they can go. After all, he was THEIR horse. They don’t need a place they’re going to constantly have to maintain and clean from countless bouquets and tchotkes and cards and notes people will leave. There’s dignity in privacy. These poor people have had the spotlight glaring on them for months (just look at some of the comments and articles and diagnoses by wannabe know-it-alls). They deserve their peace and privacy.[/QUOTE]
When it looked like would make it Mrs. Jackson said he was America’s Horse and she wanted him to go somewhere where his fans could visit him (which was not feasible on their farm). I would think maybe they would feel the same about his final resting place. I hope it will be at the KY Horse Park or maybe Churchill Downs so everyone that loved him could have a chance to pay their respects many many years down the road. But of course it is up to them.
He gave it his all right up to the end. He did not suffer and was well taken care of. So for that, we are thankful.
We all wished for a miracle. And he gave us one. Go run free my friend.
RIP Barbaro
The strongest horse that had such a will to live. He will be remembered forever.
Any news if his legs will be amputated and used for further research?
I was just leaving my own horse who is suffering from an abscess and heading back to the office when I heard the news.
I was at the Preakness that day and saw everything first hand. I hurt so bad right now, and I can’t even IMAGINE what kind of pain the Jacksons and the medial staff at U of P are feeling right now. My prayers are with them during this very difficult time.
Barbaro optimized why I love Thoroughbreds so much. His heart and class were unmatched, and his will to win (on the track and in life) is something to revere. It breaks my heart the story ended this way. It’s not the way I would have written it, but as I’m always reminded in life - God’s ways are not our ways. I guess he decided it was time to bring Barbaro home where he belongs. I’m grateful as a fan to have seen Barbaro in person and that God shared him with all of us for the brief time that he did.
V.B. - thank you so much for the many updates you provided us. I so appreciate all your hard work.
And, God bless you mighty Barbaro - you will never be forgotten.
Godspeed Barbaro. I cannot stop crying. You gave us such hope. Let’s pray we can save many horses through the knowledge we learned from you.
Oh, and the tears flow again. I just went out to get my mail and my Barbaro beanie baby arrived today. What timing!
I just heard from my dad. He called as soon as he heard and was all “I know this is a hard day for you…” and I was like “why?” and he told me.
As awful as this is, I still thing that the Jacksons did the right thing in allowing him to fight as long as he could.
We love you, Barbaro! RIP, buddy.
Godspeed Barbaro, you were more than a great race horse you, became the new face of racing, a new kind of hero! Of course my heros have always been horses, race on beautiful boy!
