Barbaro ~ America's Horse
NBC has now rescheduled their Barbaro documentary to air on their regular network at 8 pm on saturday: Barbaro Documentary Will Air on NBC After Derby.
Thank heavens NBC was finally smart enough to put it on their main network instead of CNBC!

I’ll go set the VCR to tape it.

Thanks for the update and EVERYTHING you do to keep us updated. I’ve got a feeling that this is the longest running and longest thread in COTH BB history and for good reason as well!

I still check in daily to see the latest news and still go to light a candle for Barbaro.

Thanks Alex…GREAT NEWS!!!
Saturday night’s fundraiser and raffles on saturday and sunday raised $20,500 for Thoroughbred Charities of America and New Bolton’s Laminitis Fund!

VB and Alex and everyone else connected with this group, thank you all for keeping this going…as long as it does Barbaro will live on.Keeping him in the forefront is of utmost importance…I still light a candle every day that they find a cure or prevention to laminitis, it takes so many horses…
Thank you again…

NPR did a piece on Barbaro’s legacy this morning: Ghost of Barbaro Looms over Derby Week.

HOW DOES A PERSON GET A BARBARO BRACELET??

BARBARO ON THE COVER OF MARYLAND LIFE MAGAZINE

I’ ve been biting my tongue on this until it officially went to print- which has been SOOOOO HARD. Maryland Life, a glossy bi-monthly magazine published in Frederick, MD, has been the official media sponsor of the Preakness since our beginning in 2005 and our May/ June issue is known to our readers is the “Preakness” issue. It is the biggest, most well- read issue of our year and always features a Preakness- related cover. Long story short, our “non-horsey”, Michigan born editor, needed a little persuading, but I finally won my 3 month long lobbying campaign to put Barbaro on our cover this year. The photo, by Jim McCue has actually just won an award, as well…it is a magnificent shot of Barbaro running his last gallop at Pimlico on the morning of the race. There is Barbaro editorial in the magazine as well. I am so proud of this piece and so thrilled to be a part of making it happen! (and special thanks to VaBred whom I contacted several weeks ago regarding comtact information with regards to the editorial). The magazine returns to us from the printer today but will not be on sale at newsstands for another 10 days (it was unfortunately late coming out  ). It will also be available to be view online at marylandlife.com by week’ s end or next Monday, at the latest.

I am so glad they are going to replay Barbaro-America’s Horse. I watched it the first time and it was so beautifully done. Cried my eyes out. Set your Tivo, VCRs, it is a keeper. It was shown in High Def, so everything was just amazing.

Really looking forward to seeing this publication! Great Job!!!

jennifersw - PLEASE reprint a reminder about this when it comes out. Some of us old farts have short memories! It sounds wonderful and many congratulations for making it happen!

Please EVERYONE, read The Church Of Barbaro. I posted the link above.

That really is a great article. I love my friend Jamie’s quote about the wacky pile-- SO TRUE!

And I love Kathy’s quote about how he brought so many people together. He really did.

Although I met the dancer lady… and she belongs in the wacky pile as well. Hehe. (Hope she doesn’t post here!)

Randee, thank you SO much!

The Church of Barbaro article brought it all back…I too am sitting here crying.

The writer did a great job putting into words how all of these people feel totally unlike those on the outside who just don’t understand what it is about these horses that moves us.

It can be very hard at times because my husband is one of those that “doesn’t get it.”

Thanks Alex~
Two days to go before the Derby and the atmosphere will now be building, the post position draw is complete. Barclay Tagg is now at Churchill (he typically arrives later in the week for the big events) and has always had a lot of confidence in his maturing colt: Confident Tagg Looking for Derby Encore. He would be my preference for a win. I think my pick is Curlin and I’ll also snag a couple of 15-1s, Hard Spun and Tiago. To be honest, I think unless Curlin is the real deal, this race is wide open!
As Churchill prepares for their big day, they need to prepare for a guest of honour: Churchill Prepares for Visit from Queen.
For those planning visits to Kentucky horse country, Elizabeth LaBan, FOB, wrote this tour of Kentucky for the Philadelphia Inquirer: Bluegrass Bonanza.

The Church of Barbaro…

no words, just tears, still, and again.

New York Times has a great article on Dr. Richardson: Year Later, Barbaro’s Doctor Looks Back, and Moves On, excerpt:

“From a purely surgical perspective, it was extremely unsatisfying because he didn’t make it,” Richardson, 53, said of Barbaro. “Professionally, I think we did the best we could. I’m not at all embarrassed by anything that was done. Personally, I’m very sad that we didn’t save him. As a horseman, as someone who really wanted to save the horse, it’s extremely dissatisfying.”

On the other hand, he added: “Do I think we ended up doing some good things for the profession and the industry? Yes. The increased awareness of the issues of racetrack safety. People adopting horses. Even the awareness of a horse as an animal was increased. I think people became aware of the fact that sophisticated surgery can be done on horses. A lot of people knew that already; some didn’t.”

Any word yet. ?

So tell us VB , has a final decision been made yet on the final resting place for such a WONDERFUL horse. I just thought with all the events coming up that maybe they would have put him to a final burial.?

No. Still no decision.

I watched the movie, The Queen, the other day, and during the included actual footage of the public hysteria over Diana’s death, I kept wondering “What IS IT with these people?”

I never could figure out why they were so distraught over a woman they didn’t know, who was none too tightly wrapped, who was overhorsed from the start, who made a pile of bad decisions, then discussed it all on international television.

I kept comparing the public reaction to Princess Diana’s death to the reaction to Barbaro’s death, and guess what? IMO–ours makes much more sense! Barbaro was an innocent, a hero, and really a noble, grand being.

I expect that someday, the attachment we feel to that horse will lessen–attachments have a way of doing that–but I don’t think we’ll ever forget what he was, and what he symbolized for us.

Nonetheless, if you haven’t seen the movie, it’s great. You know the story, but the acting is wonderful. Very, very few of the characters are less than perfectly drawn.
