Yes, it certainly was.
I was surprised that I didn’t cry more throughout it. Now, that’s not to say that I didn’t shed a bucketful of tears… When they show the Preakness race and Edgar pulling Barbaro up, I can no longer watch it. I’ve seen it too many times in too many video clips.
It was beautifully done, and I loved the way they ended it!
Thanks Alex~
Update 1854: We have photographs taken from Churchill yesterday by Jeannine Edwards and Wendy.
Wonderful photos! Thanks so much VB for the opportunity to see them!
I had to record the special last night so I could watch it alone. Had to stop it every once in a while just to prepare for the next segment.
I loved the ending as well.
I wonder how long it will be before I can think of him and not swell up with tears and have to take deep breaths. Amazing the effect this horse has had on me. It’s nice to know I’m not alone.
It was a beautiful documentary. I LOVED the ending–so uplifting!
If you have ever been to Preakness you know they spiff the place up with flowers everywhere the eye can see. What you may not know is they leave almost all of it where it is and leave it to die if no one picks it up. Heck one year we came home with an 8 foot palm tree! Anyway I went to the stake barn the day after Preakness last year and the flowers that surrounded the outside of Barbaro’s stall were still there. I got two tree like things and three smaller plants, all of which are supposed to look like black eyed susans but I think they are actually daisies. They were in bad shape and over time I ended up having to throw away all but one. I brought the one inside over the winter and it is now thriving to an extent, but needs a bigger pot to really do well.
I would be more than happy to give it to the Jackson’s if you think it is something they would want. It would be the least I could do to thank them for all they have done for my life’s passion which is stopping horse slaughter. I know some of you know them personally, think it is something they would want, or are they over loaded on momentos already?
Oh!!! I want you to ask them.
Let me PM you privately.
I don’t know them, but I can’t imagine they’d be anything but thrilled over such a gift. That’s very nice of you to think of giving it to them.

Aint that the truth. Tears streaming as I read this thread.
I’m curious, is the Preakness planning anything related to Barbaro? VirginaBred, have you heard anything?
I will give a report when plans are finalized.
Barbaro a Nation’s Horse
I watched this twice this weekend, cried through most of it. What a lovely remembrance of a truly wonderful horse and the people who tried so desparately to help him survive.
I loved the clip of the “new” colt…he looks so much like Barbaro. Perhaps a reincarnation of the big guy. I think his soul deserves that second chance.
He has his own race on that day! The first annual Barbaro Stakes will be run before the Preakness. The Jacksons will be there to hand out the trophy. In this way he will always be remembered on Preakness day.

For the record it is the renamed, ungraded, $100,000 Sir Barton Stakes which debuted in 1993 in honor of Sir Barton, the first horse to win the later dubed Triple Crown in 1919.
The name may pose some conflict as Delaware Park also renamed a race in honor of him too. The $300,000 Grade 3 Leonard Richards Stakes was renamed as of March 1st the Barbaro Stakes. That race is run on July 15th.
I think it’s kind of sad that they renamed the Sir Barton. It’s a nice PR move, I guess, except Sir Barton was (and is) a real legend of the sport… it’s kind of sad to watch history slipping away like that…
Thanks Alex~
Update 1860: A quick reminder for those in the Philadelphia area: Dr. Dean Richardson lecture at Hatboro-Horsham High School (899 Horsham Rd, Horsham, Pa, 19044) on Wednesday, May 9, 7:30 pm, followed by a light reception and Q/A session. The NBC DVD, Barbaro: A Nation’s Horse will be shown at 6:15 pm with copies available for sale. I am planning to attend, and will be selling some Barbaro horsehat merchadise and the Riding with Barbaro wristbands. There will also be a silent auction. The event is sponsored by Hatboro-Horsham Education Foundation.
Thanks Alex~
Update 1861: The Preakness is starting to shape up, but it looks like the emphatic performances of both Street Sense and Hard Spun may create a short field for the Preakness: Preakness Update: Hard Spun’s Connections Hope to Turn Tables. Chelokee, a possibility for the Preakness, is also being considered for the first running of the Barbaro Stakes, excerpt:
A decision on Fair Hill-based Chelokee should be made by the end of the week according to trainer Michael Matz. The third place finisher in the Florida Derby (gr. I) worked five furlongs Monday morning with regular exercise rider Peter Brette aboard.
“He went really well,” Matz said. “We’ll walk him tomorrow and he’ll jog on Wednesday. I thought Carl’s horse ran pretty good. I guess he ran better than good. We are still undecided on the Preakness and maybe we’ll go in the Barbaro.”
Does anyone have an end date set for this thread?
Just wondering…
I’m so anxious to watch next weekend! But I’m also quite nervous…for obvious reasons.
I hope we don’t see an end to this thread anytime soon. I know many of us don’t post here much anymore, but many, many of us read daily.
