Thanks Alex~
Update 1924: Here is the ESPN piece that aired over Preakness weekend on Fans of Barbaro. There is also a nice video of Barbaro and Ruffian: Barbaro’s Legacy Lives On.
Baltimore Sun: Barbaro remembered.

Does Pimlico have plans to resurface their track??? Or does the state of MD racing prohibit that?
From what I’ve read, the purse makes the Preakness a less-than-stellar attraction for owners and trainers. That, combined with the very visible breakdowns, should prod the managers of the track to make improvements. (This is looking at the situation from thousands of miles away, you understand. And from very little knowledge.)

Laurierace was kind enough to take these yesterday! Wonderful photos!
All from the Barbaro Stakes~
Laurierace - LOFFly photos. Were you a guest of one of the connections or press? Michael was so teary, I felt such sympathy and pride for him at the same time.
Not an ending to Barbaro’s LEgacy, but certainly a most excellent chapter.

Thank you, I am a trainer at Pimlico. I just positioned myself in a good spot.
Laurierace, I agree that those are terrific shots. The one of Mr. Jackson and Michael Matz hugging sent me into the teary mode again.
VB, many thanks again for all the stories you’ve gathered on the Barbaro Stakes, etc., they are great - more teary mode here…
Heck, thanks for keeping us Barbaro fans informed.
Thanks Alex~
Update 1925: One of the benefits of my media credential at the Preakness was interacting with many of the members of the media. I had the pleasure to meet and talk with William Rhoden. He wrote a great piece today: Even After Death, a Horse’s Impact Is Felt.

It sure would be nice if someone who is a subscriber to this paper would cut and paste the article. I went thru the screens to sign up for a free trial only for it to ask for credit card info, which I won’t give out for a ‘free trial’.
Barbaro Stakes photos
Thank you so much for the photos at Pimlico. I’m in CA, and evn though I tuned into the Preakness broadcast for the whole event in the hope that the tributes to Barbaro would be aired, I saw only about 15 seconds in total encompassing the race finish and Michael Matz saying a few words to the commentator and then looking emotional, which I thought the newsman held the camera on him uncomfortably too long. I was so disappointed not to even hear if the parachutist event took place, nor any coverage of the Jacksons, etc. I had the non-cable broadcast NBC coverage and thought it was really lacking in its piece on Barbaro. I felt saddened and let-down all Saturday after the Preakness and then found that the photos had been posted here. The photos really are fantastic – thank you so much.
msj, I had the same problem!
Great pictures, Laurierace! Thanks for sharing them. I have to admit, I love that MM’s son is always in a suit at the races…very classy!
OSB, I also felt the camera was held on MM at that very emotional moment WAY too long. I was actually telling them to leave him alone (like they could hear me through my TV!). Thought that was pretty uncalled for.
The Barbaro Stakes, parachute event, etc, was on ESPN’s coverage and done quite well. Just not everyone can catch it that way.
On a sidenote, I was SEETHING last night when I ran to the grocery store. Sports show on the radio (I was looking for weather) was really bashing NBC for cutting away from the OT in the hockey game to carry the Preakness. They couldn’t understand why there was an hour “pre-game,” nor why anyone could care about watching horses run around a track. They were really rude and said they were going to write NBC and complain about it, despite a few people calling in and telling them the how’s & why’s. Idiots…but then after saying that, they went right into nascar coverage. How’s that for ironic? (can’t watch horses run around a track, but you can watch cars go roundy-roundy for hours on end? How weird).
I got all teary eyed too watching the interview from the Barbaro Stakes. How awesome. What awesome photos! Thanks for sharing! I also agree that they needed to cut away from MM much sooner than they did.
You know how crass the liberal press is. No class what so ever.
It made me furious also.
not just the liberal press (but I digress)

I probably shouldn’t say this since I don’t want to discourage anyone from buying something that benefits such a great cause, but I saw this painting in person and didn’t care for it. She had one of Street Sense right next to it and I thought that one was much better.

You said it so much nicer
Even seeing it on TV I thought it was…off. There’s just something about the way that she painted Barbaro that isn’t him, though I can’t put my finger on it directly. As for EP’s bug eyes? Yeah, that made me bug a bit, too…
But the great thing is that someone WILL buy the painting, will love it, and the monies will go to a needed area. That’s all that really matters

If you look closely, the jockey doesn’t have bug eyes. I believe what you are seeing are the air vents at the edge of the googles.
I just checked and the current bid is $7300.00. I hope it makes it to $10,000.00!
I was ok with Edgar, I thought Barbaro looked like a big headed quarter horse instead of the gorgeous TB specimen that he really was. Go ahead and bid it up folks, there are tons of people that wouldn’t know a TB head from an elephant’s head and would think it was quite lovely I am sure!
