How cruel to heckle Edgar Prado
I was reading the book, ‘Barbaro – The Horse Who Captured America’s Heart’, and was disgusted to find that Edgar Prado was heckled by race spectators when he rode at Belmont Park following Barbaro’s injury. I cannot understand how cruel people can be!

Why in God’s name were they heckling him-because he pulled Barbaro up???
Cruel is an understatement!!!
The loudest ones are often the dumbest.
Edgar Prado
I don’t know if I am allowed to quote direct ver batum, but on page 169 it states that he was yelled at, ‘You screwed up. You broke down Barbaro. You should quit. Go home.’ Imagine what the Jacksons thought if they were aware of his treatmtent! This after mulling over at home whether he should return to racing after the heartbreak of his mother’s death and Barbaro’s injury. I hope that people who said those things are proud of themselves – for shame!!!
WOW, I’m impressed that this thread is still alive and going strong
Hugs to everyone :)!
I have to admit…
I have to admit, I cannot remember a day that the thought of Barbaro’s passing has not crossed my mind, even if it is for only a brief flicker.
Barbaro touched something in us that will always be there. I have one of the bracelets in the Lael stable colors and have been wearing it for months. The thought never crosses my mind to take it off. When I think of all the good Barbaro has done for so many unforunate horses who now have better lives, I know what his true purpose was. He is never far from my thoughts.
VANITY FAIR MAGAZINE
When you get a chance- RUN- do not walk, and buy a copy of this months VF. There is a brilliant article about our BOY in there- touching, factual, amazing- with excerpts from Mrs. Jacksons diary, interviews with everyone…it is by far the most touching and wonderful account of the entire journey that I have seen.
It will make you cry, all over again, but you’ll remember the brilliance, the sheer brilliance and integrity of the wonder that was, and IS, Barbaro.
Of course, I am still wearing my bracelet…
Thank You for letting us know…
I look forward to reading, hearing all about Barbaro. Perhaps his struggle is a reflection of incidences with my own experiences through the years with horses. He was so very, very special!

It is a great article, but I HATE the begining of it and this paragraph especially: "
[I]
Never fall in love with a horse.
They were taught to race when they were two, and they didn’t all take to it. Some were just stubborn. Some, like juvenile delinquents, went out of their way to do the exact opposite of what you told them to do. Some were scared. Some were just bored. Some were just mean. Some were dumb as rocks. In 2005, 72,487 horses pulled out of the starting gate in races across North America. Their average earnings were $15,851. It wasn’t enough to pay for the cost of maintaining them, and of those who ran, 26 percent earned less than $1,000.
Never fall in love with a horse."

Thank You for posting the article link
Thank you for posting the link in VF. It was insightful to read excerpts from Mrs Jackson’s journal – what overwhelming faith, strength and courage to weather the days of Barbaro’s treatment! What a sensitive and dedicated man Michael Matz is, and how devoted he was to Barbaro – so many people whose lives were touched forever by this special horse!
I want to again thank VirginiaBred for advising me where to send a poem about Barbaro and a note to the Jacksons c/o New Bolton. I received kind acknowledgement today – it was so unexpected and brought on the tears!
I phoned the lady who I had addressed it to at New Bolton to thank her for forwarding it onwards. She was so very gracious – as are all the staff I have ever spoken to. They are very special people!
(Speaking about journals and diaries, I still write in a diary I started the week before Robert Kennedy’s sad passing in LA! My stable ‘buddies’ at the time and I vowed to start to write about our adventures so we could read them for future reflection. One contribution remembers that, on the day that the whole world was glued to their televisions and radios to witness the first landing on the moon by astronauts, I wrote that this teenager was out feeding and caring for my horse and pony like any other day! I still remember that I was the only vehicle on the road driving home from the stable on arguably the most significant day since the dawning of mankind! Kids and horses!)
Great to hear, OldSaddleBag.

Based on Vanity Fair’s article, a film is being planned: Peter Berg Saddles Up Barbaro Flick.[/QUOTE]
My agent just got back to me - unfortunately I am not handsome enough for the role as Peter Brette, however they have expressed interest in me playing the role of Michael’s ‘Get Back Guy’.
Guys I’ll be famous!!!

We already discussed who will play “us” at great length… we decided we want Tommy Lee Jones for DR.
(If they do cast him as DR, I’m totally claiming creative rights)
IIRC, I think Mrs. Jackson requested Meryl Streep.
Yes, we’re sparing no expense with our fictitious Barbaro movie.
HLAS, you’ll make a lovely addition as the get back guy, I’ll pencil you in.
It will be interesting who will play who - I think Tom Hanks would make a very good Michael. I have no idea who would play Peter though, he is so legendary he might have to play himself. I am thinking with a bit make up Smarty Jones would make a great Messaging!
