Barefooters - some new education?

I have only had one “barefoot” horse in the last few years but since I’m broken and conditions have been weird this spring, plus the old guy out and out refusing to have shoes nailed on despite Bute (we may be in our final stretch with him) we’ve pulled all of their shoes and they are naked footed.

Obviously going through a bit of transition with all of them, but I’m wondering who are the new barefoot educators that have info I can read. I am bored being on layup and want to learn new things.

Last I knew we had Strasser laming horses, but Ramey, Jackson and Poss teaching interesting things. Who are the new players who have interesting thoughts or things worth debunking?

By the way - if any of them really need shoes back on, my farrier is great and will re-apply them - I am not a barefoot fanatic, I just like to learn and understand viewpoints!

Since COVID, Wendy Murdoch has done many interesting webinars and many of them relate to hoof anatomy, trimming and other barefoot topics. I think they now are accessible through the SureFoot channel on YouTube. But in any case, search using keywords like Wendy Murdoch, SureFoot, “Webinars with Wendy” combined with “hoof,” might bring up some good stuff.

Not an exclusive barefooter, but Dr. Debra Taylor is a DMV podiatrist who does a lot of pro-barefoot and alternative work:

Thank you both! I just need some new rabbit holes to dive down and new educators!

I really should have stayed in academia

I trim my own horses and loved Wendy’s webinars with Dr. Robert Bowker.

I haven’t taken these courses, but my previous farrier told me if I’m going to take a course, try this one:

Alicia Harlov at The Humble Hoof is a good resource. Her main focus is rehab, but it’s all relevant.

I’ve heard really interesting things about David Landreville and did a clinic with him last year. Unfortunately I couldn’t pick up much personally from one clinic, but the principles that he uses seem sound and he reports significant success with rehabbing horses. He has an online library with hundreds of videos of trims that could probably provide some really valuable information!

Yes, I was going to mention David Landreville. His videos library is a monthly subscription, which also gives access to his FB group where you can ask questions. It is tightly moderated so only he and his assistants can provide advice. The philosphy is frequent trimming to simulate natural wear, so it might not be for everyone who doesn’t want to have hands on the feet every 1-2 weeks.

I’d also say Daisy Bicking. She calls herself a farrier and deals with a lot of laminitis and other tough cases, but has solid info about barefoot trimming as well.
