Barn lights

Anyone who has done a barn from scratch, do you have an idea of how many lumens per square foot you would need?

Barn is 36x48. We want to do lighting down the aisle, and then on a separate switch, do one light over 4 stalls on the left.

First, consider that you can see horses best if you illuminate them from the side, not right overhead.

A horse is a mass like a table, illuminated from above you see all that is on the table just fine, but below it, not so well.

Put lights on the sides of aisles and stalls, not in the middle.

What size lights, that depends on the light fixture and how high you can hang it.

One example, T-8 LED lights work great for large areas, give you all the light you need, are rated to be used at certain heights and to provide a cone of light depending on that height.
About 18’ high, they cover a 20’ by 30’ area well.

Your electrician can tell you what would work best in your situation.

If your stalls are open to the aisle where you can put a light over the front wall, that light can illuminate the stall on one side, the aisle on the other in a manner that would be ideal to see a horse standing in a stall or in the aisle.

I’ve been slowly replacing our barn lights with LED shop lights. Each is 3200 lumens, they’re spaced about 10-12 feet apart, and it’s plenty of light. Ceiling is 12-14’ tall where these lights are placed in the aisle and stalls, it is an open shedrow.
