Barns in Baton Rouge, LA?

My SO has started a job in BR, and I will be moving myself and my horse down there around November. I’m not too familiar with the area, other than what I have found from my internet searches, but it doesn’t seem to be a lot in the way of barns:(

So I’m turning to COTH in the hopes that someone will be able to point me in the direction of a barn that will work well for my horse and myself. Also, names of good vets and farriers would be much appreciated. I will be heading down next weekend, and for a week in September to visit places.

What I am looking for:
Barn with a stall, and daily turnout in good pastures with small groups is a must
Ideally an eventing barn, but an H/J barn or dressage that doesn’t mind me bringing in jumps is ok
individualized feeding programs/ or the ability to bring my own feed (He is a little bit of a hard keeper, but on the right feed program does great)
Free/plentiful access to hay
Either a good trainer on site/has one in regularly/hauls out to one regularly
ability to ride/jump outside of lessons

Also, I currently drive about a little over an hour (50ish miles) to my barn here in Pittsburgh, so I am willing to drive a ways out of the city for a good barn.
Thank ya’ll so much!

There is an old thread here:http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-247922.html and it looks like this place http://www.rightlead.com/ is still under the same owner

Thanks Scubed, I have looked at most of the old threads on here - was hoping someone might know of something new or had words of wisdom where to stay away from.

Right lead is on my list of places to contact, but I have a feeling it might not be the best place for my guy as she does not have a barn - only run-in sheds according to the website.

Shoot an email to Laura VanderVliet at L&N Equestrian. She is not in that area any more (based out of Aiken) but she may have some names she can give you. I don’t think there is that much around there but there is some.

Otherwise sounds like a fun town to live in (non-horsey stuff…good food etc).

rightleadequestrian - does not have barn but is very horse friendly. HOrses seem happy there.

Hidden Acres, mostly dressage but Nancy is great and can be very helpful- close to rightleadequestrian

Jasmine Farms- dont know much about them, but there is an eventer there.

Contact www.Sedariders.org , that is our local GMO and they have several shows a year.

Right Lead has relocated and is no longer in the Baton Rouge area. BREC is convenient, but I wouldn’t board there (it may be better now, but I don’t know).

There are also some h/j barns in the Gonzales area and if you are willing to travel, more eventers are in the Covington/Folsom area. Ginny Harrison is one of them located out there - http://www.harrisoneq.com/

Unfortunately, eventing is not big in this area. I was so very sad when Michelle (Right Lead) left because not only was she a great instructor, the location was great. I’m currently on the search for a new lesson barn and I can’t decide if I want to do the h/j place 30 min. away or stick with eventing 1 hour+ away…

Good luck with your search and your move!! The better parts of Baton Rouge are great and most people here are super friendly. The drivers are terrible, but you’ll get used to it pretty quick!

If you are the west side of BR, these might be worth looking at.

I didn’t know Michelle had moved. She was really good and her place was nice though wet at times.

Pharview and Sterlingsilver will be over an hour drive from Baton Rouge but Sterling Silver is very nice and has xcountry jumps. Pharview does too, but I have never been there.

How far away did she relocate?

We will be on the southern part of BR

Nancy Burba has sold her place and will be moving away. Not sure what the new owner’s plans are regarding boarding/discipline.

Covington/Folsom is probably your best bet. If you are coming in September, Fleur de Leap (horse trials) is September 20-21.

I will be in town that weekend, I’ll have to stop by.

Sent you a PM!
