Barns in the Nevada City/Grass Valley, CA area

My parents are moving out to this area in July and are figuring out whether they want to buy a horse property and keep Nikki at home or board somewhere. Any barns that people would recommend?

Not looking for much - good footing and good stalls are a must, but don’t need training; Nikki will be semi-retired, so she doesn’t need to be in a program. Just needs somewhere that’s good quality, gets good hay, and won’t mind my mom doing most of Nikki’s care.

Thanks!

i’m not sure how many professional barns there are in that area. it’s rather rural (or was last i was there). you might be able to find some places via craigslist but that’s always a crapshoot. good luck!

I sent a FB blurb to my NorCal friends. I will update if I get anything from them. I’ve been out of the area for a few years, so I am not much help as of the moment.

Hi Shorty! If they ARE interested in buying in the area, reach out to me. I live about an hour to 90 minutes from there, I’m a licensed real estate agent, so I could help them in their search.

I believe Sarah Ballou lives in that area, she is a GP jumper rider but not sure if she does boarding or training. I know some eventing barns in that area (Kristi Nunnink trains in Penn Valley I believe). I think theres Penn Valley Stables which I think is nice, but no personal experience. I’ve been to Summerwood Arabians, which is really nice, but not sure if they take in non-Arabians or boarders.

I have my retired horses at Equus Farms in Marysville. I believe they have a waiting list. They have EXCELLENT care (owners are farriers too) but it is strictly a no ride facility (retirement/board only).

Send me a PM if you want more info.

Check out Anne Greco at Cedar Hill Farm in Grass Valley. She shows the local circuit and also does retirement and rehab. She has a web page, sorry I don’t have link. Good luck!

Check out bayequest.com there is a section for boarding that they can look through. We lived over on the other side in Placerville and we moved out of state from there 2 years ago and I know there are places in the general vicinity but can’t remember who. I’m fairly certain there is a smaller barn that boards in GV. Or there used to be. Marysville is quite a drive if they want to see the horse on a regular basis.

You might like Oak Tree Farms in Penn Valley.
