Barns near New Haven, CT?

Hi all!

I’ve seen a few older threads on this topic but nothing more recent/nothing specific to what I’m thinking and was hoping any localish people could help me out.

I’m a student in New Haven, thinking of bringing a horse to school with me. I don’t need/want anything fancy, just would like an indoor so I can ride in the CT winters. Turnout would be super nice, but most important is of course the cost and having good constant care that I can trust.

Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

I can’t give any specific recommendations, but look in the Bethany area, which is 10-15 miles from New Haven (I’m guessing a 20 minute drive?) When I was horse-shopping I went to a barn there with an indoor, and we passed some others.

You will probably experience sticker shock, unless you’re coming from winters in Florida, somewhere else in New England, or anywhere in coastal California!

Check out Sperry View Farm in Bethany.

Do they still have polo/ a riding program out of the Yale armory? (Near the Cox Cage) When I was there there were stalls for a riding program that allowed a few boarders. But that was eons ago

PM’d you. Many options. Call

It got closed down by Yale. I think the polo team might still have games out of the indoor? but the horses are elsewhere.

Definitely check out Sperry View. I know previous students have kept horses there over the years.

So sad the armory was closed down. That was the biggest indoor I have ever ridden in.

Yale just bought and moved into Nancy Cole’s place in Bethany. So they are still around.

I have two cats who were born in that Armory stable. So many memories of riding in that indoor. It was truly vast!

Much history associated with that place, too. It was such a bummer when the whole complex got demolished, would that have been in 2008 / 09? It was a real loss to the community, and I think a short-sighted decision on the University’s part.

One of the funniest things I ever heard was the resident polo pro describing a piece of early performance art that the artist Matthew Barney made there when he was still a undergrad, which I think involved rappelling around the indoor wearing nothing but hot pink body paint. Talk about culture shock, the polo people were still talking about that 20 years later!

Plenty of stories about that place! Does anyone remember the older gent who lived in the apartment behind the score board? His name was Tommy Coughlin, and he was The Official Scorekeeper. He was always so nice to speak with.

And having the rifle range abut the riding area was also interesting. New horses would positively freak out the first few times they heard a volley, but they’d get used to it quite quickly.

Helen Joyce Stables on the East Haven/North Haven line, probably about 20 minutes or so from New Haven, easy access off I-91. Lots of grass turnout, indoor, outdoor, fields and trails for hacking, great dressage trainer, and they have a ton of options as far as potentially working off board and board at different price points.
