Barrel horse halters

A bit of a random, probably dumb, question. I have always wondered why barrel horses often wear the wide-noseband halters. I think the only time I have seen those used (in my very limited experience with Western-trained horses) is on barrel horses. I wasn’t sure if the purpose was to help control them, although the ones I have dealt with have usually been great on the ground, or if its just a fashion statement that is popular in that discipline.

Just saw a picture of one and felt compelled to come to COTH

It’s just a fashion thing, the ‘bronc halter’ look. I don’t quite get it

When I first saw this, I thought it said, “Barrel horse haters,” and I thought, “Oh, great. We hate peanut rollers, now we hate barrel horses, too?”

I agree, seems to be a fashion fad. A young lady at the barn had one for her very much not barrel racing Haflinger. And I’ve seen them for sale at rodeo vendor booths.

I will be so happy when the bronc halter trend dies. They are SO UGLY.

I got one of the rope halter ones as a gift, (like this- http://greenrivertack.com/catalog/images/15727.jpg) and I deserved an Oscar for keeping a smile on my face and being properly thankful while mentally reviewing the poor life choices I must have made to lead someone to believe I would actually put that thing on my horses.

Ummmm because you can BEDAZZLE them of course!! And add neon zebra, or leopard print, or turquoise snake skin.

Barrel Racing in the last decade or so has gotten very “flashy” same goes for a lot of the girls into the rodeo scene. I don’t quite get it - but its the new trend.

I grew up around ranching / rodeo girls that dress like this.

But there is a trend for this type of style…

Or this…

And what better to go with your bright, flashy, bedazzeled outfit than a bright, flashy, bedazzeled halter?

Appsolute got it.

It’s more square inches in which to add bling. BLIIIIIIING!!!

I saw a bridle with a huge bedazzled one-eared bridle- as in so oddly shaped I’m not sure the horse could put her ears forward. When I asked about it the gal huffily told me ‘you’re a hater! everybody else loves it!’ Um, ok but did you ask your horse? Seriously, it was the oddest thing-

Ah, here it is- and it was snugged up to the base of her ear. A, hideous, and B, ow.

That site won’t load for me, but I know the type of halter that is being referred to
Agree it is just a fad, same as some people all at once riding with huge slobber straps
I guess it allows lots of room to apply a personal brand to . My son has a few of those halters, that his former better half got, and then branded that nose piece with their brand !
I did question him as to why he had those halters, when he came to ride with me one weekend!
No, he is not a barrel racer, nor was his ex, so I don;t know whether those bronc like halters are specific to the barrel crowd, or just a fad in general
I do know that I had a heck of a time, at equine trade shows, to find a nice conservative western show headstall
Seems like the rodeo stye with huge cheek pieces and bling were in!

Oh my, I had no idea you could do neon zebra stripes! All the ones I’ve seen have been tooled leather with or without studs.

Actually, if they market them right, I could see some of the English crowd going for it. Bling-bling helmets and browbands are very popular right now. Just need to throw some Swarovski crystals on there.

Most of the bronc halters I have ever seen have always been used the way they were meant to be lol. For Rodeo Saddle Bronc riding. In most events/rodeos the bronc will have a wide nose band halter on that is then connected to the bronc rope. Though I think it may come down to a strength thing. I was once told by an old bronc rider it was because of an PETA/other animal welfare organization thing they had to start using them, since apparently the normal nylon/rope halters used in the event were seen as inhumane and too severe. I am not sure if there is any for sure truth behind his statement, but it would make sense in some aspects.

Personally for my reining I have always leaned towards colors not bling, sure my headstall and saddle has some silver… but nothing over doneXD Just simple… then I use colors to compliment my horse/myself to give us a little bit of a soft pop haha.

If any one is interested in a place to find some really interesting custom ones, check this place out. Sure they have a lot, but I had one done with our family cattle brand for my dad as a present, more for decoration and sentimental value.

that all said, I personally don’t like any flat nose halter, I have trained/worked with way to many pushy horses who acted like those halters were not there. Cross ties/shows great! General use… Rope halters all the way for mexP

I cannot recall anything other than the leather halters on rough stock, going back to mid 20th century. There is quite a collection of bronc halters at the South Point casino in Vegas, all leather with wide nose.

Actually barrel racers have always liked flashy style. In the 1960’s sparkle pants were all the rage. Every color you could think of. Of course now they bedazzle everything. Why not, doesn’t hurt anything. I don’t do bedazzle but I sure love my leopard print!

Rodeo fashion is different than show fashion.
Just look at the chaps that bronc riders use
Bling is in, for barrel racing, and nothing wrong with that, for those that are seriously in NBRA
Most local breed shows no longer offer games classes, although they still remain very popular as grass root open shows, thus the days where you showed all around, running games in the same clothes that you wore in the show classes, are almost gone. Along with that, clothes got more specialized, between the two (show and rodeo )

The english people definitely do not want it, I assure you that.:slight_smile:
