I have an OTTB that suffered a bow last yr while on the track. It is now healed and I am starting him back under saddle. he was never lame on it. The vet said he is sound for anything but jumping through deep mud over 4 ft fences.
Has anyone ever had this situation and been successful at barrel racing? Thank you in advance!
I had a horse with a healed bow that I showed in the 3’ hunters for years, never had any problem. I think barrel racing would be a bit harder, but you’ve already asked your vet and we have not physically examined the horse, so I’d go with vet’s opinion. did you ask about barrel racing?
I have a friend that this just happened to. After he bowed his tendon she gave him a year off. Now she races him. She is just VERY CAUTIOUS of what ground she runs him on, how much she ran him, ect. She actually just won one of our local jackpots about a month ago
I’ve known many people who have rehabbed a horse with tendon issues. As tun_n_burn said, you just have to be mindful of it. Keep in good contact with your vet and take special care to warm up and cool down the tendons.
I had a ottb that had two bows, got the split tendon stem cell surgry and is so sound it’s crazy…I fully believe with the right treatment and rehab anything is possible. Would I exercise a little more caution? Yes probably, but there’s no reason to not give it a chance.
Thanks everyone! We will see how he does. Right now he is starting to canter under saddle again.
We had one bow a tendon. Rehabbed it & he ran for about 6-7 more years successfully, then he bowed it again & had to be retired. He was near twenty on the first bow, so mid to late twenties on the second. He recovered from the second enough for other riding, and lived into his 30’s.
The vet said after the first one he would be more likely to do it again, but that may have been due to his age or the severity of the bow- it’s been a long time & I don’t really remember.
We were careful about where we ran him, and made sure he was always in great shape & legged up when he ran.
