Base-narrow behind; just conformation, or can conditioning/shoeing help?

10-year-old TB mare, cute mover overall, came off the track about 2.5 years ago. In the time I’ve owned her, she’s whacked her left hind with her right hind 5+ times. It’s only been more than a scratch once (still had racing shoes with toe grabs on, was ouchy for a couple days), but I’m not sure if there’s anything I can do about it other than hind boots when I ride. Her feet are in really good shape, nice heels, wearing evenly. Thoughts?

IME they were born that way. You might minimize it a little with a good farrier but skeletal angles are skeletal angles. Keep him in good weight will help the appearance but it is what it is. Seen some “corrective shoeing” attempts that looked good at first but created lame horses shortly afterwards so be careful.

That’s about what I’ve found from independent research. More curiosity than anything  I’d rather deal with the occasional scuff than change her shoes.

If you can, take the shoes off behind. I found my OTTB hit waay less without shoes on.

Base narrow is the way the horse is built. Its he horse’s god given conformation. I’m with Findeight I wouldn’t screw around with mother natures design. IME they stand more “narrow” than travel that way when viewed from behind at a trot or canter.

I agree with StormyDay, if you take the hind shoes off he will interfere less. I would ask the farrier to do a what many call a ‘Mustang Roll’ on his hinds to eliminate any sharp edges. I would keep a watchful eye for chips on the insides of his hind feet and remove them ASAP.

I would use protective boot,or wraps, when doing speed work or going over rough terrain.

interestingly enuf, my QH was like this for years. However, after rads to check his plantar angles, the vet recommended bar shoes behind-a big wide bar. He walked away from the farrier straight and true without the twist. I was amazed and so was my farrier. Still sound a year later and still tracking better.
