Baycox as a pre-race "booster"?

I was told that there are more than a few horses at the local harness track that received Baycox (an EPM medication) before a race as some sort of pre-race “boost” or “to light them up”. Is this a common practice across all horse racing venues, both flat and harness? I mentioned it to one of the vets that works for the practice that I use, and she confirmed that there are in fact folks at the local track that do use it for this purpose, though she didn’t agree with it. Has anyone else seen Baycox used like this?

Supposedly Michael Gill treated all his claims with Marquis and did a myectomy. I have never heard of the use of the drug you mentioned.

Marquis is a metabolite of the drug Toltrazuril, that is in Baycox. Baycox was the first drug that Bayer released for the treatment of EPM. It was not a great panacea, by any means, and they kept going until they had Marquis.

I don’t think that either of them are particularly useful, however, I had heard, about 10 years ago, about the use of Baycox, in Canada, on standardbreds. Some people will try anything!

I’ve also heard or people injecting bleach, so yes, people will try anything.
