Beaches to ride in Virginia or Maryland

I’d like to take a couple of our horses to a beach to ride and do a photoshoot. Anyone know which beaches in Northern Virginia or Maryland allow personal horses on the beach? Thank you

I know you can ride (or bring a horse) during certain times of year to the Assateague National Park in Virginia/Maryland.

Thank you. Never entered my mind to think of Assateague because of the wild ponies. Interesting. Thank you

Its really lovely there, if you’ve not been (with or without a horse). I’m more familiar with the Virginia end and Chincoteague. Spent every summer at my grandmothers in VA beach, and being a pony nut as a child, every summer wasn’t complete without a trip to Chincoteague/Assateague. I read Misty of Chincoteague so many times I wore the pages out! LOL

If you’re willing to travel just the tiniest bit further, Cape Henelopen State Park in Delaware offers riding on the beach in the off season:

(scroll down to the equestrian rules)

Staying in Maryland, there are a number of beaches on the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries that you can ride on year round. I have frequented the beach on the Sassafras through Grove Point Stables:

Are you allowed to be on this forum if you didn’t read Misty of Chincoteague? Ha ha. Misty, Stormy… I loved them all

Too far south for you but I relish the rides I had from st Simons to the beach on Sea Island. I got to ride with the employees of Bennies Red Barn Restaurant and from the rental stables on St Simons. perks of my clerkship with the federal judge. Galloping on the private beach on Sea Island for a couple of years was unbelievablely great.
i read every horse book growing up including Misty’s adventures

We still hold these rides! Unfortunately no more galloping down the beach (too litigious of a society these days :frowning: ) But still loads of fun!

Glad you are still going over to the beach.
Maybe start a new thread on beach riding? People have no idea how cool it is to ride down the beach with no crowds
