I tried various combinations and never found the image itself searching on either Google or Duckduckgo, but then I searched through the thread, found a previous link to it, the link no longer worked, but I put it in the Wayback Machine to see if it had been archived previously, and found it had been archived in 2018 - clicked that link, and voila.
I keep on forgetting about the Wayback Machine! Well done!
Thatâs what I remember as well. Nothing egregious, especially for an 8 year old.
ETA Ah, I see now that @supershorty628 found it. Well done!
This was me and that reality didnât fully sink in 'til after I did IHSA.
And Iâll say, as a re-rider, I have absolutely rethought my youthful dismissal of riders with push-button, fancy, or expensive horses. We talk about âseeing eye dogsâ but now I know itâs easier for me to miss than find eight good jumps on any type, made or not. I didnât appreciate how hard this sport was before, but now, now I do. Staying out of the way is hard in itself.
I want you to know I was this close to sending you a message and saying âyou knew the pony, go figure this out.â
Well found!
I have a very clear memory of seeing another picture of Lillie on a bay pony, long braids, pink bows, wearing a shadbelly, and thatâs the pic I was describing upthread. I could swear that that one also got on the cover of a magazine but maybe it wasnât Dover. Anyway, the point is, it turned out she can ride.
And the children fortunate enough to learn from sainted ponies will also hopefully stay interested enough to learn how to ride, too, instead of becoming demoralized or chewed to bits by a 10â hellion.
Hilarious some old time COTH keyboard riders thought to disparage a child who grew up to ride like a superstar. Sometimes ponies need a little spur to go. To stay straight and true. Not to duck out.
Some of the worst keyboard riders were the worst in that thread, who had no 'cred to back themselves up.
I still remember that particular Dover catalog showing up in my mailbox. I thought it was adorable back then (and a nice change from the standard h/j adults they usually featured).
Still think itâs adorable (and prescient)!
Thank you for finding that photo.
It is totally adorable.
Both the pony and the kid⊠swoon.
My mom and I have played this game too generally tend to think high 5 figs to mid 6 figs. One thing my mom and I (or my friends and I) like to do when we are watching just for fun is try to guess the price range, and ponies always end up in crazy numbers. Wildest part is they can get more expensive than a decent horse!
Aside from the insane degree of cuteness, Iâm having some (color of) jacket envy.
Time to trawl eBay.
And, aw, I remember showing on grass.
This is why my daughter hops on my 17hd warmblood mare when she feels like riding, rather than the size appropriate but very sensitive small pony. My 1200lb, Belgian Warmblood stalker (she follows me everywhere) treats my child like the precious cargo she is, the pony thinks the world is on fire.
just call me supersleuthy
Lol!!
or maybe you and I both are having a severe Mandela effectâŠ
The Mandela effect got me too. I remember a bay and bows.
There were probably bows at that point no matter what the color of the pony actually was. Lol.

This one has the bay pony picture. But not the pink bows.
The pony I was remembering was Vanity Fair. The beautiful plain bay with the mealy nose.
That was a fun read.
Enchanted Forest was a lovely, lovely pony. And very horselike in the way he went around the ring.
Blackberry was also adorable. I believe she was one of the last ponies who got her start via Emerson Burr, if I recall correctly. She certainly went on to do him proud.
Obviously all the kids mentioned in that article never learned to ride well on those very nice pony hunters. /s.
The fact that most of them are top riders today in both the hunter and jumper rings must be just a big coincidence. Lol.
