Beet pulp measurment

I have never know the answer to this question is beet pulp typical measured dry or soaked. Let’s say I wanted to feed my horse 4 lbs of beet pulp a day. Is that 4 lbs soaked or 4 lbs dry?

Thanks

Dry.

dry weight.

Dry weight. But 4 lbs dry weight is a huge amount by volume and weight soaked. That stuff expands like crazy!

Weigh all feed things on a dry weight basis (or as bagged, which might not be terribly dry LOL). All nutritional content is based on that. Water adds no nutrition, just weight.

And yes, given that beep shreds are in the 9c/lb range, 4lb is a large volume to start, and HUGE when soaked. I would not be feeding 4lb of it. Maybe that was just an example?

If you find you are “needing” to feed that much of it, then I would be looking at the rest of the diet and getting more calorie-dense foods into the horse.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes 4lbs was an example. He gets 6 cups a day, but was wanting to measure it to see exactly how much that is.

Oh good LOL 6c shreds is probably 2/3lb, thereabouts. At that amount of beep, the weight is almost irrelevant

My beet pulp pellets are just over 3 cups to the pound, very dense. And honestly two cups soaked makes about as big a mash as you could ever want. I will try today to see what the final volume turns out to be! That’s what’s so wonderful about it IMHO. Horse takes in a lot of water plus really feels they’ve had a big meal  but has had 2/3 of a lb. And it carries supplements beautifully.

Yes. My easy keeper gets 1/2 lb beet pulp soaked to carry his vitamin and mineral supplements and ground flax. Soaked it probably makes around 2 qts of mash, so he thinks he is getting a “real” meal.

OK I checked today. Two cups (500 ml) of my pellets makes 2 litres/2000 ml of mash that is nicely fluffed but not at all soupy. It would probably grow a bit more in a larger tub with a bit more water ( using an insulated cooler jar). So that’s a minimum 4x expansion in all directions.

Thanks @Scribbler I really have to remember to bring a cup of mine into the house to weigh, I’m surprised 3 cups weighs that much.

I’m using beet pulp pellets not shreds.

I’m using a proper kitchen measuring cup from the dollar store. Not a mug.

I just weighed my Standlee brand beet pulp pellets. One measuring cup weighed 5.25 ounces.

Exactly. 3 cups plus is 16 ounces, one pound!

Yep! Is that the same brand you weighed?

No, I just have generic beet pulp pellets from a Canadian mill!

Scribbler, this made me laugh - all “proper” horse people use measuring cups (among other things) from the dollar store, of course!
