Beet Pulp

I’m pretty sure there was a thread on cost of Beet Pulp around the country but can’t find it and at the time I didn’t pay alot of attention to prices. I started feeding it to my old stallion this week and was surprised at the cost but I hadn’t bought any for a long time. I paid $12.69 for 50 lbs whats that like compared to other places in the country? I’m in central Mn.

I feel as though I got ripped off the other day. I usually go to TSC and I can get a bag of beet pulp for just under $15. Well I went to a local feed store and I didn’t even think to ask for the price of it, assuming it would be the same. I was charged $.50 a pound!

Prices around here range from $13 - $16 for a 40-pound bag of beet pulp shreds, depending on the store. Alfalfa pellets are a little cheaper and work well soaked as fodder for older horses and those with bad teeth.

I pay $10.35 for a 50 lb bag of the beet pulp pellets here in NY. I have found that the pellets last longer, and are actually cheaper than the shreds. The shreds run about $13/ 50 lb bag and only last for half as long. I know last year prices got jacked up around here. According to local feed stores, there was a shortage around the country. Not sure if it’s true or just a reason to charge more? Anyhow… priced usually go up before winter anyhow… maybe in the Spring it will be a more palatable price. Good luck!

I’m paying $12 for 50lbs of beet pulp pellets - I’m in Washington state. I feed a scoop and a half of pellets - which is 8lbs dry a day to one horse. Wet the mess weighs 40lbs.

Sugar beets are harvested in the fall this years crop is in bags now - spring isn’t going to make anything cheaper. There is a shortage in some areas of the country, because of weather some beet crops failed or were damaged. The reason for growing it has nothing to do with livestock, that is where table sugar comes from, the need for sugar regulates the amount of sugar beet that is planted. Selling the pulp for use by livestock is a way to get rid of the pulp.

I love BP best feed mix for all my horses.

It has gone up in the last few months. I’m paying almost $13 for 50#'s BP
in WA state.

[edit]

I am paying 16.80 :eek:for a 40# bag (If I can get them)
Cannot get the pellets anymore anywhere down here…sigh

$13.50 per 40 lb bag unmolassed beet pulp shreds, Milford NH.

After not having in our area for a few months, I’m hoarding (got 6 bags for 2 horses)! They LOVE it too much in the warm meals to run out…

Around $13. Up almost $5 in 2 years.

It’s not quite the bargain it used to be. I’ve been questioning whether to just feed more hay–but we’re having a hay shortage. :uhoh:

How much beet pulp do you feed out?
I have shredded beet pulp, and not sure if I should soak a one pound coffee can’s worth per horse or what.
thanks for responses

The 4 qt metal scoop from Tractor Supply is 2.7 lbs dry shredded. Hope that helps!

My guy was getting 1 scoop morning and night.

And Texas is around the $15 mark right now. Was around $8-9 when I started feeding it in April!

Just over $14 for a 40# bag of the shredded BP here in Central Kentucky

A couple months ago I called around Lancaster County, PA, looking for beet pulp for another board member. All I could find was shreds with molassesa few bags at one place for around $9.50 (I’m sure the cost will have gone up with a new supply) and a few hundred bags  at another feed store for around $12.50 (no limits–you could buy all you could afford).

Tractor Supply was the most expensive place at something like $15-$16 dollars a bag! The independent feed stores were less expensive which kind of surprised me…

Other stores were sold out and didn’t know when they would be getting their orders in…

It’s $16.85 a 40lb bag in central Arkansas. Before the shortage it was somewhere between $10-12 for a 50lb bag.

County,

Mills Fleet Farm has it for $10.79. It is a 40 lb bag, shredded and with molasses added.

I’ll have to check Fleet Farm, my problem with them is I rarely go to one the closest is 40 miles from here.

I paid $8.85 for a 40# of shreds with molasses the other day but they told me it was about to go WAY up to about $15 a bag. The guy said it should be going back down in the next few months though.

I looked at TSC the other day and they had the exact same kind for $13.69 a bag. So, when the feed store goes up, I’ll just go to TSC  I can’t find anyone around here who has the shreds without molasses in it. So, I’m just rinsing to get rid of the sugar.

$19.75 for a 40# bag of shredded, no molasses, just on the east side of St. Louis. I go through about three bags of the stuff a week. This past spring I was paying $11 for the same stuff. Craziness.

Those of you stating you get 50# bags - are they really that heavy (I’m talking the shredded type, not pellets)? I’ve been buying beet pulp for about four years now from various places (where ever the price was best) and I have yet to see a 50# bag. Right before the shortage started, I was paying $13.50 for a 40# bag. Then during the shortage, IF I could find it, it was around $15 for a 40# bag. I bought some just yesterday that I had to drive 45 miles round trip for because no one closer to me had some, and it was $13.70 for a 40# bag. It got so bad around here last month that no one had any at all except for one feed store who had 25# bags. They knew the demand and jacked the price up to $15.50 on those 25# bags!!

i pay in uk 8.50 for abag of pellets and 9.50 for speedy beat
dont buy shreds
