BEEZIE MADDEN stepping back

I was only saying that it’s not 100% necessary or true that talent must be attached to a high dollar investment. People from smaller means have done well for themselves (Matz and others) Horses from less gilded lineages have also come through and done well (Touch of Class, Snowman, etc)

We are all stuck on the dollars to the point that we’re ignoring our common sense.

Em

She doesn’t have anything to prove to anyone and sometimes that’s the best time to stop the competitive side of a business and focus on the more personal. So good for her.

She is 56 years old. Should she keep traveling and pushing it at the top level until she is badly hurt or does not have the energy to go on? She feels it is time for her to change focus, to develop horses in a system and to teach and pass no her knowledge as one of the only American riders that CAN breed and develop a horse to World Cup level. If she can spend 20 years teaching young people how to do that, that is more useful to the American sport than competing when you have already won everything. She might like to spend more time at home too.

I want to clarify that I am in awe of everyone who competes regularly at the very top levels of the sport - NO ONE can do that without talent and hard work, and yes, money is also a requirement and it always has been. I don’t know that there was ever a time when that wasn’t true. It’s never been cheap to fly a horse across the ocean for the Olympics, Pan Am games, Nations Cups, whatever.

Matz had the backing of a wealthy owner (maybe more than one?) just as Beezie has had. Snowman was an anomaly even at that time.

I don’t think there has ever been a person of moderate means who has made it to the very top of our sport financing it on his or her own, so why would we think that should be possible today? If I am wrong please feel free to provide examples.

No one goes to the top of any sport with little money. How would you pay for equipment and coaching? Maybe a few children are so talented they get it for free but most have money from family or the government or play a sport that is sponsored by the school or the local goverment, like track or football or hockey.

Many people from lower middle class families or even working class used to be able to make it to the top of the horse sports by doing well at the junior or amateur national or region competitions and attracting sponsors. Some even still can in Europe, although it is getting very hard now that you must pay to be invited to top shows. Ordinary people can still make money in horses but making it by winning prizes is getting very hard. Maybe easier in dressage.

But make no mistake, having wealthy clients is not the same as wealthy parents or husband. They do not just give you money and you go to the Olympics. You earn those clients and must work hard to keep the relationship and also win a lot so they get their investment. It means you are good and also professional so they want to hire you.

Was lucky enough to audit clinics she and John had at Caz.
Fantastic opportunity, and exercises I still think about to this day.

She is pretty awesome

I truly hope the Maddens had no awareness of Epstein’s activities, and it’s possible Abigail Wexner was unaware… But the timing is interesting. It could be just due to Beezie’s age and the right time, or it could be they know their major sponsor may be in trouble. If the Wexners or anyone supported what Epstein did, good riddance. But only time will tell if the timing is related or just a coincidence…

Oh, I definitely didn’t mean to imply that Maddens had any involvement or idea what was going on. But I do think Wexners are in a precarious position and the moment and it seems like it might not get resolved for a while, so it may be in their best interests to liquidate some assets.

Do you mean without sponsors or owners?

Because Eric Lamaze comes to mind.

Beezie is a class act and has nothing to prove to us, as stated up thread. She will always remain one of my idols and if she continues to clinic and has any audit spots near me I’ll jump at the chance to audit. There is much that we can all learn from Beezie’s horsemanship, skill, knowledge, and class. Cheers to setting and achieving new goals Beezie!

Eric Lamaze’s top horses at the moment (Fine Lady 5, Chacco Kid, & Coco Bongo) are owned by Artisan Farms. Andy & Carlene Ziegler are extremely wealthy after the success of their investment management firm.

Hickstead, the horse that made Eric’s career, was owned by Ashland Stables. John Fleischhacker made some $145.2 million when he sold his Daig Corp. medical device business to St. Jude.

Hickstead didn’t make Erics career  He had one long before Hickstead.

Not sure what your point is, I am aware he has owners :confused: I asked the poster to clarify, because Lamaze did in fact, come from nothing.

I believe Beezie was 1st and 10th in a good class yesterday at WEF. So she’s still in the swing of things.

You should see the trash talk from so called experts about Tori Colvin winning the big hunter challenge in Wellington, on the CoTH FB page. Honest to God, some people…

What’s your point? IDK if you ever owned high end show horses, but it is really really really expensive to own and compete with them. Should the best talent in the world sit horseless, without backers???

Hmm. I was watching the video of her winning round that COTH provided and thinking, once again, how horses go so well for her. Glad I don’t do Facebook.
