BEEZIE MADDEN stepping back

Well, that was kind of the point. Someone upthread suggested that Eric Lamaze was an example of someone who made it to the top without sponsors and owners. The post you’re responding to simply pointed out that Eric Lamaze did indeed have “sponsors and owners.”

So, you appear to actually agree with the post you seem to think you disagree with.

that poster made a snarky remark about educating us all. Perhaps I misread her meaning there. IDK, I’m still so annoyed with the whole TC thing, it’s clouding my thinking

I’ve owned reasonably expensive jumpers and know people who’ve owned jumpers all the way up to Olympic level. I can verify that it’s really really really really really really expensive to own and compete them. I don’t recall saying anything differently.

I also never said that Beezie or Eric shouldn’t have owners or sponsors. I only mentioned that Beezie’s primary owner is having some unfortunate and public issues and it’s possible she’s selling the horses to have some extra money and fewer expensive assets, to deal with all that.

Then when someone made a comment that sounded like they thought Eric had no owners or sponsors (even at present), I simply stated that he does now, and has in the past, had wealthy owners to support him.

I have beef with neither of them. They both have had/are having great careers and it’s great that they had/have great supporters.

Yeah, I did have a bit of hesitation about seeming to defend that particular poster, who has been fairly unpleasant, but my innate sense of fairness won out.

Oh, I do. Any time there’s a big hunter class, they come out of the woodwork. And I always wonder why - like do they really think Tori or Peter Pletcher or whomever is going to read their Facebook comment and be like “yes of course, why didn’t I think of that? Clearly I would win more if I just listened to this rando on FB.”

But…no one said Eric didn’t have sponsors now…they just said that he CAME from nothing, i.e. didn’t have sponsors/big money when he started out. Which, not having a ton of money does in fact make it much harder to make it.

I can’t tell if you are purposefully being difficult or not. The snarky, know it all attitude really doesn’t come off as intelligent and superior as you think it does.

LOL - Not just a rando but most probably a rando who doesn’t ride hunters and hasn’t stepped foot on a showground since 1983.

I’m imagining that Beeze is probably damn tired of living on the road and all the pressure that comes from being at the top of a sport. Good on her and how amazing for anyone who gets to ride and train with her. Love to get her here for a clinic in the future!

Apologies, I did not interpret the poster as specifying Eric grew up with no sponsors or owners as a kid or early in his career. It seemed to be a generic statement that Eric has not had owners or sponsors at all.

If they meant kids now usually come from money, then yes, they don’t make 'em like they used to. Beezie, Laura, Todd, and Kent all grew up with relatively little in my neck of the woods. Todd used to ride with my childhood trainer when they were kids and into their 20s. Great stories of crazy riding antics there. And I remember Kent showing up with the old man and the stock trailer with the big “Chuck-A-Luck Stables” sign on it. He looked a mess and he’d go ripping around that jumper ring on a little appaloosa. Everyone would hold their breath because he was either going to win or flip his horse at that speed.

I remember that!!
Nancy Whitehead should get the credit for recognizing Kent’s talent, and polishing him up a bit…
Once she got him more show ring ready, he started to get some really good junior hunter and equitation horses, from good owners

Ah, the Buster the Wonder Pony days  That pony had springs for legs and Kent had no fear.

I think the spotted pony is the one whose picture pops up occasionally, often next to a present day picture of Kent where his position looks almost exactly the same. It’s pretty remarkable.

I see this as absolutely the next logical step for Beezie. She is still young and healthy enough to bring along up and coming ponies as well as shifting her focus to teaching. I think it’s great that she is in the position to be able to make these career decisions. As we know in this sport it can take only an unfortunate few seconds to completely change the trajectory of your life. I for one am extremely grateful that she wants to teach and impart her vast knowledge to others. Not only will her legacy include some of the most wonderful performances, but also her ability to go beyond herself to improve the sport as a whole. A big thanks for Beezie for being willing to continue to give of herself to the sport!

I wonder who the additional two or three riders that will have their horse(s) stabled with her will be?
What an incredible opportunity. Beezie is such a great example of a thinking rider, so quiet and beautifully positioned in the saddle, and she’s such a good sport.

I hope she gets her wish and finds a student with the talent and funds, who has the commitment and drive necessary to make the U.S. international teams. I hope most of her students will be from the U.S. , not that spreading her knowledge around the world would be a bad thing, but I’d hate for us to have to compete against her students.

As for the T.C. naysayers, surely they’ve seen her in the EQ in the past and must know that she can ride with good equitation? She is choosing to ride the way she does in the hunter ring. Horses go so well for her, I’m surprised that people second guess her riding.

The Maddens have had a number of “kids” with them in Europe the last couple years at least. Late teens and twenty something girls mostly with deep pockets shipping their horses over there to jump 120s. I’m sure there is no shortage of young riders with deep pockets who will jump at a spot.

I agree there will be no shortage of hopefuls, but she did mention that she would like a very talented student who will be committed to moving up to international competition and sticking with it, so I would guess she doesn’t have the one she’s hoping for, yet.

Saw a post today on the Beezie Madden/John Madden Sales FB page that Darry Lou has been sold to Jennifer Gates.

https://www.facebook.com/beeziemadde…type=3&theater

"It is with mixed emotions that John Madden Sales, Inc and Mrs. Abigail Wexner announce the sale of Darry Lou to Evergate Stables, LLC. While we will be sad to see him go, we are excited to see him join the team at Evergate Stables, LLC. Darry Lou had previously been tried and was under contract for after the 2020 Olympic Games, but the postponement of the Games changed the timeline of the sale.

“I have been very lucky to have had Darry Lou in my life and I will always cherish the incredible moments we had together. I can’t thank Abigail Wexner enough for making it all possible. I think Jennifer and Darry Lou will be a great partnership and I look forward to seeing what they can do together. I have no doubt Darry is going to an exceptional home and I wish Jennifer and Harrie the best of luck with him,” commented Beezie Madden.

“I am so grateful and excited to have Darry Lou join the Evergate Stables team. I have admired this wonderful horse and his partnership with Beezie, one of my biggest idols in equestrian sport, for a long time,” remarked Jennifer Gates, President of Evergate Stables. “While we are saddened not to see Darry and Beezie at the Olympics this year, we are looking forward to getting to know him at home while the competition restrictions remain in place, and continuing to give him the love and care he deserves. I want to extend a huge thank you to John and Beezie, the John Madden Sales, Inc. team, as well as my coach, Harrie Smolders, and Darry Lou’s former owner, Mrs. Abigail Wexner, for making this partnership possible.”"

Happy for all parties involved, but I have to say I think it’s bizarre Jennifer (President of Evergate Stables) didn’t thank her parents (CFO, Evergate Stables).

And it’s odd because??? She and Nayal have a business. Though she’s been supported by her parents, she’s an adult with a Stanford Degree and I would guess enough business sense to garner investors. That’s a stallion, easy to form either partnerships or syndicates.

It is possible she did this without her father. And maybe just had the backing of her future husband’s backers.

Wow. I know Beezie said this would happen but still… I sure will miss her riding.

Who do you think finances Jennifer? Mom and Dad. She’s in medical school and has 3 horse farms and over 36 horses. She’s not funding that herself and if she had business partners (not her parents) why doesn’t she give them some credit? Why? Because she is financed by the millions her family has provided her as their child. I hope she has every success with the horse but make no mistake, she’s not doing this without Microsoft money. Geez Louise, next we’ll be thinking pigs can fly instead of horses.
