Bell Boots for Sasquatch

I’m looking to get a new pair of bell boots for my 17.2 American Warmblood, who definitely inherited his Clyde moms’ feet. Wears a size 4 shoe up front. I haven’t shopped for new bell boots for him in years, and will need to buy them on-line, as no one carries them in-stock anywhere in his size (and there are no English tack shops here anyway). Although if it’s a brand that TSC carries, they could special order them for me.

Instead of trying something at random, and having to send it back if it doesn’t fit, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to reach to see if there are others here that have an X-Large horse with nice, round, huge feet that have experience with a bell boot that actually fits. I prefer velcro closure - I always seem to fight with pull-ons.

Thanks in advance.

I have the professionals choice quick wrap bell boots for my jumper with weirdly large feet. They’re clunky but they do the job, plus they’re easy to clean and take on and off.

This is what I have as well. My mare takes the XXX on the front and XX on the back.

I have a full set of their SMBs, so I’m familiar with the brand. Those would be nice because they would perfectly match his leg boots, but the 16" circumference (for their “large”) sounds small to me.

I need to remember to bring my tape measure down when I feed tomorrow AM. I keep forgetting the darn thing to properly measure the circumference of his hoof.

@high hat where did you find the XL or XXL? I’m only seeing S, M & L everywhere, even on the manufacturers site?

Here is one source: https://www.statelinetack.com/item/professionals-choice-ballistic-overreach-boots/SLT721530/

My mare is 17.1+ and the XXXLarge are actually just a little large in front.

AH! I was looking at the PC bell boots, not the PC overreach boots.

My KWPN wears a size 5 shoe and an XL Davis PVC bell boot for 24/7 turnout. They stay on. They work. $20 pr. The end.

FWIW - My 17.1h Han X TB wears a 4 wide up front. The PC ballistic, overreach, no turn boots JUST fit around and are short in a 3xl. I found some rubber velcro Davis boots at my local Dover in an XL and they fit fine around, but are a little short (better than the PC though). The ones with the closest correct length were generic/no name, gum rubber, velcro boots at a local discount tack store in a 2xl.

Good luck!

Thanks for the additions suggestions @Xanthoria and @chardo84 . Appreciate it.

After measuring, my horses’ hoof circumference was a whopping 21.75", with a diameter of 6.35" (so maybe not quite as round as they appear!).

Based on that, I think I’ll give the Davis boots a try. I’m not sure I’'ll like the overreach no turns, or that they’ll fit (never had over reach boots, always used bell boots). Maybe I should get the sparkly purple ones?

Absolutely! I do find the non black ones seem to tear more easily for some reason. But sparkles!

I was teasing about the purple. If I had a mare, I’d seriously consider a fun bright color. Purple is my favorite color. But somehow putting purple sparkles on a boy seemed “wrong”. LOL I ordered the basic black ones at Dover. They only carry them in 4 colors (white, navy, hunter & black). Not sure why they don’t just carry all the fun colors.

Well I use mine for 24/7 turnout and if they get pulled off, any dark color is impossible to find because it looks like a poo. So I buy white or any really bright neon color

Good point. The neon orange would be handy for that!

Do they still market those “petal” bell boots, where you could add as many “petals” as you need to get the fit you need?

@Belowthesalt - wow, I haven’t seen a pair of those in years (like pre-2000). Had completely forgotten about them. A quick search shows they aren’t available (anywhere in the US anyway).

BUT, it did bring up a really cute pair of bell boots with flowers on them! LOL

All I remember is they were sure noisy when the horse was galloping. LOL I did a set in black & red for my 16.3 h.h. 1,400 lb. Appaloosa, who wore size 3+ shoes. I wonder where those are today…probably in a landfill!

Ha ha - I still have a few pairs of those petal bell boots floating around somewhere. We always did black and red alternating pedals for our barn colors when I was a kid!

All of my horses have big feet, and most wear bell boots. I use the following:
Professional Choice Ballistic Overreach boots
Eskadron Fleece topped bell boots
Double thickness gum rubber pull on bell boots

If they don’t offer at least XXL for the pull-ons then they’re definitely not big enough! And I always ordered the double thickness bottoms - always regretted it when I didn’t. When I used to order 3-4 pairs of the gum rubber boots at a time I would shop around to find who offered the big sizes and the cheapest prices, and it wasn’t too hard to find a bunch of difference places to shop from.

The ProChoice and Eskadron boots are easier size-wise. The XXL ProChoice ones fit all of my horses (well, all of the big horses…they’re, of course, too big on some of the smaller-footed horses). And I think my Eskadrons are XL and big enough for all of mine.

Professionals Choice ballistic ones in XXXL fit my horse who wears a size 6 shoe, so the XXL would
probably be fine for your horse
