Bellerita 1987-2010

The chestnut TB mare Bellerita was put to sleep this afternoon due to complications from traumatic injuries received Friday night as a result of being cast in her stall.

She was formerly the Fox Hunting mount of Dr Wendy Ying when she rode with the Los Altos Hounds in California as their Whipper-in.She came to me in 1999.

She was the mother of four good Welsh Partbreds who reside in Az,WI and TN. The eldest, Pro A Anniversary Dance, took 14th last year at the pony finals in 2008. The youngest Pro A Dancing Autumn lives here with us. The second colt is a mare in WI named Pro A Dance in Summer.
The middle child Pro A Dawnswyr lives in AZ

She was the benchmark for TBs for me. Always sunny natured and never cross, and injury free until her last days.

She was good and sane to handle and passed that on to every baby she had. A good mother and pasture mate,so long as everyone knew she was the Boss.

Goodnight girl,I sure will miss you.

Tamara - I’m so sorry you lost her. She must have been a very grand mare.

thank you all

The decision was made all the harder not so much by our long years together but by the fact that she never looked her 23 years…13 maybe 16 but never 23…

so the immediate up front part of my mind said “what? she’s young,we can do this and she’ll be fine afterward”

the back part of my mind said “she’s old and has done her part and deserves better…stop being stupid”

when all the damages were added up and the repercussions assessed, the decision was made that, even pulling thru this, she had very little chance of being the horse she always had been.As another poster said, “grand and noble stoic old mares” is what she was and what she always now will remain. Her dignity and nobility intact to the end of her life and in my memories of her.

Wendy got to come and see her here about a month ago.For that I am grateful as well. I had always kept her briefed on this and that about Belle, not because I had to, just 'cause I knew she loved her as well

thanks again

Tamara

There is no horse on this green earth better than a good hunt horse, I’m sorry and I’ll give the hossies and extra hug tonight…

Godspeed, Bellerita.

And hugs to you for doing right by her.

So sorry for the loss of your grand old girl. You did right by her, and did the hard thing, letting her keep her dignity.

RIP Bellerita

hugs

thank you and yes I agree…

I think part of my searches for future broodmares will have the question “did she hunt?” somewhere in the boxes to be checked

in fact, I am certain it will…

thanks again all for the posts and pms and emails

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your mare. It’s such a hard decision to make, even when we know it to be the right thing to do for the animal.

Sending a hug from NJ.

Amen to that, they are partners and friends. Condolences Tamara.

Terribly sorry for your loss. Sounds like a wonderful mare.

Well you did absolutely the right thing. And even now, your ‘grand mare’ is over The Bridge, telling all the Others that her human had the grace and courage to be with her at the end, to let her go in dignity–to truly love her.

godspeed, Bellerita.
