Belmont thread

I wonder how Rick likes his crow…baked or fried???

Oh for goodness sake, the reporters are being slightly dramatic about BB and Dutrow…I’m going out for ice cream…I’ll catch up later!

I didn’t think it was 50/50 that Big Brown would survive the race. That’s crap.

However, on the heels of Barbaro and Eight Belles, having Kent Desormoux bring BB home in good condition - after this inexplicable loss after the hype - he did a huge SERVICE to horse racing.

We all know somethings wrong. I’m not expert enough to say what. But it’s FABULOUS Big Brown walked off the track.

Good man - Kent.

I 2nd Utah. Zito is classy. He didn’t give any speculation. He nicely said that he doesn’t know that horse so he can’t say anything and that this is just the way the business is.

Secretariat. (Though he was not, of course, a long shot.;))

I got home from work and found out my network channels weren’t working, and figured BB would be SURE to win since I couldn’t watch! (I did listen on ESPN, though, so maybe that’s the problem…)

So now we wait for next year!

They kept talking about how quiet he was like it was a good thing. I wondered if he wasn’t too quiet. I also wondered if taking him off steroids would have an effect?
BB went into every TC race that quiet. He unloaded at Pimlico and Belmont very composed and unfazed by dozens of photogs waiting for him.

The good thing is if the horse checks out fine, then he’s gonna have to race again to redeem himself. So no immediate retirement. I hope he vets fine.

Well that is one horse I didn’t bet on! Oh well, it is only money. I will have to say Da Tara ran one hell of a race!

He was first the whole time. I can’t say that I have ever seen that! Amazing.

It did look like BB took a few off steps at the trot, but he did look fine at the walk. Hope he isn’t bleeding internally. I think he is probably ok.

Another chance at the triple crown gone…:frowning:

The “Dead Heat”…

Question for the racing gurus from a H/J person who enjoys racing but knows very little about technical issues:

ABC is reporting a “dead heat” in the show position and has taken the trifecta off the bottom line (reporting only the exacta payout). How does this work for the owners in terms of the purse? What about for bettors? How often does this happen (I’ve never seen it, but that’s like saying that a person who watches 5 baseball games a year has never seen a grand slam)?

Thanks!

I also give a lot of credit to Kent, better to take care of the boy, that is what matters most. He is still a great horse.

Owners split the purse for 3rd and 4th places (i.e they add them both and split them in half). Similar thing with bettors, bettors with both horses on their tickets get paid, which will mean a smaller payout.
I have no idea what percentage of races have deadheats for any of the placings, but it happens.

I just rewatched that race to make myself feel better about the ‘no triple crown, again’ thing, and there was a bit where sham was ahead of him, so he wasn’t technically in front the entire way. Should I go watch it again, I don’t mind, LOL

bravo KD!

KD has risen inestimably in my opinion:yes:! Take that ETA!

disappointment but silver lining is the horse is alive, the jockey took the horse in mind and we have another year to dream
Bingo.

Thanks Drvmb1ggl3!

I should clarify that… bettors with either horse on their trifecta tickets get paid.

My husband and I were both furious that they gave such little attention to the winner. Yes, it is a shame that the TC got foiled and strange how Big Brown tanked, but jeez, they barely showed the finish, barely spoke with the winner’s “people”. Everything was about BB, Dutrow yada yada yada.

Da’Tara’s wire to wire run was pretty impressive, esp at 1.5 mi and esp for a 35-1 longshot.

I hope BB is okay but I also think Da’Tara deserves some applause too.

Gee, Dutrow finally gives an interview bordering on gracious. He says he sees no problems with BB and is looking for them- will scope just to check things out but really doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with the horse.

A nice departure at least from the frequent searching for excuses from losing trainers.

Complete order of finish, please?

Anyonw know what’s up with BB? My friend called and said they were going to have him scoped, that they thought he was bleeding into his lungs, or something? Not really sure what happened with him, and I’m sad there’s no TC winner, but I have to say Da Tara did quite a nice job especially giving that last bit with the heat today.
